Window issue: Not exactly sure...yet

Recommended Posts

I drove the 02 to work today and when i got home i started to roll the window down a bit ( from about 4" down from the top) and it made a weird screeching kinda noise.  Then rolled it all the way up and heard some sort of metal kinda thing ping pong its way down the inside of the door.  I didn't try to roll it down yet or see what it could be.

any thoughts on what came loose?  or what to do next so i don't make things any worse or harder for myself.  it may just be that regardless... especially with 90+ degree days here in Portland.

thanks!

Remove the door card and all mysteries shall be revealed... and also that’s the only way to fix whatever broke ?

If you have never done a card removal, plenty of info on FAQ but three tips:

- There is a screw behind the vent window knob. Use an allen wrench to push the little round plastic cover out from the hole in the back of the knob. Pay attention to spring and washer order and direction when unassembling...assuming POs put things together right last time

- Other screws are pretty obvious for arm rest and handle

- Invest in a door clip tool for a few bucks to pop clips around perimiter. Easy since they are 40 yr old plastic. When sides and bottom free, you need to give the card gentle pops from bottom to lift the upper trim off the door metal ridge where it pressure fits

Good luck

It really helps functionality if you take out the latch mechanism, clean it and replace the little bushings on it and the inner door handle.  You'll need three of these per side:  51216442159

Looks like mintgrun beat me to the draw!

Check the door brake also. If there is a metallic "tap" coming from the door when you change direction with the steering, the door brake spring is probably broken. There are some upgrade door brakes available from one or two other members, or you can do some searching and find how others have done it themselves.

Some years ago I did a column on repairing the window regulator mechanism.  Not only do those pantograph arm rivets break (the M-B part illustrated above) but the pot metal retainer that holds the big concentric coil helper spring in place can break; then you have to make a new one.  PM me if you'd like a copy of the column.

I successfully got the door card off last night and found a spring, a sheared center bolt I presume and what I think is maybe the original door brake? I ordered some of Mercedes parts from the local dealer, but I looks like the center “bolt” is the culprit.

Mike, I sent you a PM last night but believe I found your right up in someone else’s thread this morning. That will help a lot!

Also, Now that my interior door is exposed, what’s the best way to clean / prep the surface rust so I can seal this up for a long while? Do I need to take the door off as I’d like to leave it in place if possible. I wasn’t planning on this job yet, ( I’m new at any restoration work) but I’d like to get things done right and then move on to the next thing. dd312bd04d0232ff0507e7f8c6f7120f.jpg

Put some new grease (I used the pink with lithium) on your window slides. Replace the 3 grommets as suggested. It can get slightly tricky but you’ll get it. Take pictures of the direction on the wires if you’re worried. Clean any 40 year old garbage out of the bottom of the door and make sure your drain holes are clear. Make sure your plastic is in good shape or replace that. It protects your door card from water.

  • 3 weeks later...

Finally getting some time to look into this, i just took the regulator out today and realized that it was the spring that broke.  oops.  not sure why i didn't realize that. all the other hardware pieces look good.

anyway, does anyone have an extra regulator spring for sale?  I posted in "wanted parts" classifieds already.

thanks,

Baron

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
