It's a Squaretail and certainly not an original Ti...

It does have dual Weber carburetors and the proper Ti-style linkage, but that doesn't make it a Ti.

As for the 5 speed gear box... only a "dogleg" 5 speed would be special, and only if it was in good condition... no way to know that without driving it, unfortunately.

Looks like the car is fairly molested... no headrests on the front seats, but Recaro mesh headrests in the back is an interesting touch.  Love the ignition switch modification..

Don't pay too much for it... in my opinion

Hmm, not really sure, but from the pictures here are my observations:

 - Grill looks like it's from an E30

 - Those look much more like Webers than Solexes

 - The clock on the dash in place of the tachometer normally indicates and automatic car

 - Interesting that the speedo is in KPH not MPH

 - Afaik, all TIs predate square taillights, with only the tii being available for the 73+ squaries.

 - Are ALL of the VINs (passenger side body, dash pad, and engine number) missing?

Nothing definitely indicates it was ever a ti, without the VIN it is definitely no longer a ti. You would need to take an inventory of the ti/tii specific parts and figure out if it's worth paying more for this wreck than another 2002 in the same condition.

I don't know if there were any markets where side markers were mounted on ti's (Canada?) Even Italian ones would not carry those markers. But as with the rest of the car, you can't tell when or where the cocktail of parts were added to that car.

Don't pay a premium unless you are sure.

Interesting car...most assuredly not a ti--once the tii was introduced in late 1971 the ti was discontinued.

It may be a Euro car--the front plate is definitely  European, and the US style side markers--at least in the rear--aren't in the right location.  The rear bumper is a Euro chrome bumper (with the ends sawed off to  clear the fender flares!)...if it has bumper mounted license plate lights it's a Euro bumper.  The lack of front headrests and tach (both optional on Euro cars) and no printing above the dash knobs are further evidence of its non-US origins.  Check the lettering on the heater controls; if they don't speak English that's another clue And those wheels are way too wide to be the normal E21 is wheels...they're aftermarket.  The VIN would be the clincher.

Back in the day you could buy a 4 headlight setup/grille for a 2002 so that's not too unusual--at least in Europe.  The center grille does appear to be either E21 or E30.

If it can be had for a parts car price you may be able to make a few $$ on some of those desirable parts (especially if it really does have a dog-leg 5 speed).

What they said!  It was manufactured after July 1973.  It’s a Euro-spec model and it appears to be outside the U.S., based on the architecture, landscape, and kph speedometer.  Euro-spec ‘02’s had at least two VIN markings: one stamped into the outer edge of the right front inner fender, the other on a metal VIN plate riveted onto the right front inner fender, just behind the upper strut mount.  If both of these are missing, consider it a parts car only!

First photo below:  VIN stamped into the outer edge of the right front inner fender,  This is my ‘76, VIN 2742541.

Second photo below:  VIN plate riveted onto the right front inner fender, just behind the upper strut mount.  This is my ‘73 tii, VIN 2762757.

If the instrument cluster and dashboard are original — given how “messed with” the car is, I have little faith that much is original — the presence of a clock in the cluster and the absence of a clock or boost gauge on the dashboard might confirm this was neither a tii nor turbo, the two performance submodels produced during the post-July ‘73 (square taillight) era.  The absence of airbox brackets on the left inner fender, or a notch on the firewall, might further confirm that this did not start its life as a tii.

Good luck,

Steve

Thank you all for your time and your quick respond. It’s a euro car and it’s located in Greece. I have to travel 6 hours to reach it. Owner asking 4000€ Considering  a good price for a ti...but if it’s not I think it does not worth it. Car seems to be re painted so I ama afraid that’s a reason if th vin is missing.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
