I remember them being a pain to get in too.  I used some soapy water and a bamboo skewer stick (like for Kabobs) to poke the tip into the hole and then twist them in.  Good luck,

Try using a very thin and long screw driver and see if you can work it in that way pushing the sides in.

Silicone grease and a sturdy chopstick!
