Under the hood - VIN tag should be where the colour sticker is in the pic below, also stamped into the body in dark rectangle bottom left of the pic.

VIN Number positions

1. Emission Sticker on Drivers Side Door Jam (Late Cars)

2. VIN Plate under hood on Passenger Side

3. VIN Stamp Under Hood Passenger Side on body apron (Two styles, early and late, painted and unpainted)

4. Top of Steering Column Cover (Late Cars)

5. Engine Block, Drivers Side, Pad, Rear of Block above Starter

Your early car may just have #3 early style and #5.  Always best that the Block VIN matches the Body VIN.

I suspect it's gonna have a very low VIN--1660xxx due to the embossed hood trim. The only US spec 02's I've ever seen with the embossed trim are the press cars that the various car magazines used for their road tests back in the winter/spring of 1968, just before the first 2002s started arriving in the States.  Please post the VIN--AFAIK the lowest one we know of is 1660495; I have the VIN plate from a (long deceased) 2002, 1660900...

and Paul's is 1661955...

1055 later than Mike's and 1945 later than the earliest recorded, per Mike

...still, way early.  Glad to see it will see better days.

Paul,

It's a bona fide 1968 model!  I'd guess it's a July 1968 car.

Awaiting actual documentation to replace my guess!

Regards,

Steve

So that's good then Mr. Steve?

Yes, that's good, Paul!

The initial year for the 2002 was the 1968 model year, and it was slightly truncated: January to July-ish 1968.  So only about 2,900 1968 models were built.  Production immediately grew after 1968, with 5,000+ in 1969, growing to something like 20,000 in 1976.  So bona fide 1968 models are rare, they're the oldest 2002's, and they represent the purest essence of "2002-ness."

Regards,

Steve
