What's with the intake log?  Older/newer?  Mine doesn't look like that.

Intake plenum definitely not from a '73.

1973 tii block 2763759

1967 Mustang GT fastback, since 1986

I bought this car, retrieved it Saturday. Drives fantastically. Heading up to Petaluma this evening to meet Dave and retrieve the original block, crank, and whatever other odds and ends he has to offer. Plan is to keep it running well, clean up little things here and there to improve the experience, but leave it largely as-is in terms of body. I'm having a blast so far! Bummed that I just missed the swap and show, this car could really benefit. Looking forward to getting back into the Bay Area 02 events.

Reunited!. I'll decide how to track progress with the car ('build' thread or whatever) and try to post some stuff shortly. In the process of moving house at the moment.

This is great!

When were the chassis and block separated?  Recently or years ago?  I love stories about a chassis and a block reunited!

Congrats on the purchase.  Looks like a LOT of car for the money!  Great color.

Regards,

Steve

Hi Steve,

This is what I know about the car, according to Dave (previous owner): the car was once way up in Eureka, non-running and largely taken apart ("by tweakers"). It was purchased by Jeff Beyer, who worked at Hardy & Beck in Berkeley at the time, but remained mostly in pieces until Dave bought the car some time around 2002. Jeff initially didn't want to include the block in the sale, but Dave insisted and retrieved the car from Eureka and brought it to Petaluma. When Dave rebuilt the car he swapped in a tii motor that had up to that point been in a standard 02. I believe that motor, which I haven't gotten a number off of yet, was rebuilt before installation. That's what is currently in the car.

Dave sold this car to Evan (of the Bimmer Brothers) down in Redwood City just a month ago. Before that sale went through he had put the car on eBay briefly before pulling the listing. I found that while gathering information about the car before purchase. In the ad, Dave mentioned that he had the original block and that it would come with the car. When I met Evan to see the car, I asked him about this - he said that he was not aware and that it was not important to him, so he didn't pursue it. He passed along Dave's contact information and thankfully we were able to work something out.

So to answer your short question with a long story - they were only recently separated. On another note, I just found Jeff working at a BMW dealer up north. I'm going to try to get in touch and see if he remembers this car. I love digging around to get the stories behind the cars...

Excellent!  Indeed, I love a good chassis-engine reunification story!

As to the car's history, are there any metal service tags on the car's radiator?  Any paper service tags on the car's door jambs or under its hood?  Sometimes old receipts fall over the front edge of the glove compartment and get hung up on the underdash panels.

If you do get an email from BMW Archives, I'd love to know whether the car fits my projected October 10, 1972 manufacturing date.

Thanks and regards,

Steve
