I have read posts about discovering the 23rd 1600 ever made in a barn, 6V electrical systems, two piece dashes, and those cool flying buttress seats. Well this is not for you.

This topic is to see who has the latest car manufactured.

1976 Manufacturing Information

2002 Manual Transmission

Feb-76 to Jul-76

VIN 2740001 to 2745584

2002 Automatic Transmission

Jan-76 to Jun-76

VIN 2391108 to 2393292

We are looking for an automatic with a VIN closest to 2393292 or a manual with VIN closest to 2745584. Since manual cars were made one month later, the absolute last 2002 was most likely a manual. I have no information on what countries were allotted these VIN numbers. Ok, I'll start.

My VIN is 2744377. It was sold by Reeves-Birdsong Motors in Tampa Florida on October 6, 1976. It was fully optioned with sunroof and AC. It featured faux wood dashboard, and pleather seats.

Incidentally, it sold for $7314.37, a very high price as far as I can tell.

There must be a misprint in the BMW literature. Surely my 2002 was the last real one produced, given that it was outfitted with the highly desirable large bumpers, and was painted the perfect shade of Verona red.  I'm absolutely certain BMW would have discontinued producing the 2002 model after having achieved obvious perfection with mine.  No good could have come from pursuing the impossible goal of building a better 2002, and the factory workers would have walked off the assembly line in unison.

The VIN on my car is 2742348, dated March 15, 1976.  I reject the assertion that any 2002 bears a valid VIN after.  Or maybe BMW saved 2742348 for the best of the best.  Stranger things have happened.

At the Vintage 2016 in Asheville only car in siennabraun color was mine. So it is good possibility that BMW haulted manufacturing 2002's after mine.

I heard rumors that BMW is going to send me a letter confirming my statement above, but they have mentioned need to find a  Alpina typewriter first.

the VIN on my car is 2742702 and was manufactured on April 19, 1976

I asked you if it was from Atlanta because I thought I recognized it. Nice car.

I would guess that VIN 2744377 was manufactured in June 1976, but what's the specific manufacturing date per BMW Archives (email VIN to info.grouparchiv@bmwgroup.com)?  Below are five '76 window stickers, including my own VIN 2742541...

Since A/C was not factory installed, none of these window stickers show A/C: only the sales invoice would show the pricing with A/C, and radio/stereo.  If the $7,314 included dealer-installed A/C, that's actually a pretty low price, but October was very late to be selling an '02 and the e21 was looking pretty darned good, and modern!

Regards,

Steve

My 2743703 was manufactured 5/76, no idea where it was first sold but smog records go back to early 90's which lead me to believe it is a west coast car, since there was no major rust when I got it.  Came with a sunroof, Clardy AC, and Panasonic AM/FM radio.

Those are fascinating. Thanks for sharing. I'm not sure if the price I have was purchase price or amount financed so the sale price could have been higher. Good point on the bright and shiny 320i debut. I remember it being a big deal and really the car that launched bmw in the US.

It's funny: I purchased my '76 because the '02 production run was coming to an end, and I had loved my '67 1600-2 and my '70 2002.  But in '76,  I drove and was driven in -- at substantial speed -- a couple 320i's (e21's) and was wondering if I had made the right decision: the 320i was better than the '02 in every objective category but not in the highly subjective "austere German '60's styling in a light, toss-able package generating tons of driving pleasure" category.  If I hadn't purchased my '76 in July '76, I might have jumped on a 320i.  I suppose that time confirmed that a subjective feel sometimes trumps the objective measures.

Regards,

Steve

My first one was a new '76 with VIN 2745298 Sahara purchased from Allison BMW in Sunnyvale, CA.  Unfortunately it was totaled in a a freak accident in 1999.  I bought it back from the insurance company and used many of its parts on my other two 2002s.  Now I have only one, a '74 Atlantik!

Wow, that was a really late VIN. Sorry to hear it was lost asking the way.

I contacted the BMW Archives as suggested in a post above. She got back to me with the usual German efficiency.

The BMW 2002 US VIN 2744377 was manufactured on June 10th, 1976.

There were two different versions of the U.S. '76 models: (1.) a 49-state version and (2.) a California version.  If...evidence still remains, in the form of emissions controls, remnants of emissions controls, or even engine compartment stickers regarding emissions controls, you can probably confirm -- at least to a high level of certainty -- whether your car was delivered by a California dealer.

So...what have you got under the hood?

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
