Painting Behind Grille

2002#3

Recommended Posts

Friends,

Were produced with painted body work and supports behind the grille painted black or the body color?

My 1974 2002tii (a one-owner for 41 years) was repainted several years ago and the aforementioned body work and supports behind the grille were painted Inka.  However, as restoration nears its end, I think these areas would look better painted black so the the black grille will stand out better - maybe more dramatic. However, if originally painted Inka, I might just keep it Inka.

In the attached photo of the single car (June, 2015, presestore) you can see the Inka behind the black grille.  In the photo of the two cars (Jan, 2016) you can see more clearly the body area to which I refer.

Sometimes I sweat the small stuff; sometimes I don't.

Larry

I meant to begin the post with "Were 2002s produced..."  Sorry.

thank you.  I made mounts that use the bumper shock mounting screws, so no new holes required and they are centered over the shock covers.  If you would like to see how they are mounted, there are a ton of photos in the album.  If you click on the image it will take you there.

edit:  the one inch tall mount in the photo album actually works well with round lights.  It pretty much puts them at the same height as the headlights.  (Bento has a set on his car).

Except for Schwarz or other very dark colors, the hood hinge supports were painted black from the factory. They were sloppily painted in semi-gloss black with a brush. Besides the hood hinge supports, the small brackets for the grille screws were also painted. But all the other "stuff", such as the radiator support, was left body color. Once the grilles are on, and you're not shining a light into the nose, you don't really see that other body-color "stuff"!

Regards,

Steve

Larry, for what it's worth, here is a shot of the area behind my left grille with the grille out. Both sides are done this way, and there has not been any paint work done.

Thanks, LJ, for the photo.  Your dark color likely looks fine and quite acceptable behind your grille when in place.  I likely will stay with the Inka behind my all-black grille b/c it just feels right and original.  I suppose a little color peeking through will not change the world in any significant way.  What's the sweet ride beside your '02?
