Need help I D my 5 speed

Recommended Posts

I recently aquired this tranny and would like to replace the seals but I could'nt figure it out what 5 speed I have. It has a # stamp on top of the bell housing next to starter bellow and the  number is 323741/6. I tried google if its a getrag 240 or ?? but no luck. The clutch slave is the same location where the 4 speed tranny (242) I have and the reverse light sensor location is in the back, bottom shift fork. Thanks in advance.

Post a picture, most likely it is a 245/5 from a 1980-1983 320i.  your profile does not even say where you are from so we don't know if you are working from a predominantly US or European used parts source.  Here in the US that is the most common 5 speed used in conversions on 2002's

1970 1602 (purchased 12/1974)

1974 2002 Turbo

1988 M5

1986 Euro 325iC

Stamped number you found is most likely the serial number of the housing.  Don't think it helps with your search.

As mentioned above, it sounds like you may have the later 2-piece 5 speed overdrive transmission from the E21.

FYI the 5 speed close ratio boxes have three piece cases--the 90mm section (with the 5th gegar) interposed between the main case and the output end piece.  E21s with overdrive 5 speeds also have the three piece case from 80 and 81 and a two piece (main housing and end piece) case in 82 and 83.  This same case was used on the 84/85 E30 318i cars, but they don't have a takeoff for the mechanical speedometer.

That's all I know... ;-)

The M10 uses the same transmission bolt pattern as the M30, S14, and S38.

Getrag 245
+E21 320i's from 1977-09/1982.
-most commonly supported.

Getrag 240
+E21 320i's from 09/1982-X.
+E30 318 from 1984-1985
-not commonly supported (for good reasons).

Getrag 265

-E30M3

-E28/E24 (not sure which individual models were excluded).

-larger and heavier, requires extensive trans-tunnel modification.

After a minute of searching, I found this helpful thread.

Since we're ID'ing transmissions I'd like to jump in. Here's one I just got my hands on. Is this the right one?

fivespeed.jpgThat is a 4 speed from a E21

We inherited 2 transmissions both were supposed to be 5 speeds. The one in the pic shifts like a 5 speed, of course this is just sitting as pictured and shifting through the gears including reverse.
