Summer Fun In Denmark

Living in Hong Kong I sure do miss my beloved 02's that are still sitting back in Denmark patiently waiting for my return.  However I luckily just had three awesome weeks of summer holidays back home, and I was even utterly spoilt with the most fantastic of Danish summers!!   :D

Obviously the very first thing I did upon arriving back home was hurry down to my loved ones, check all fluids on my NullZwei, connect the battery, a shot of fuel straight into the carb and the trusty little M10 sprang back into life.  The joy I felt being back behind the Petri wheel again cruisin' on small Danish backroads was just indescribable.  So I just had to share it here...   ;)

I wanted to not only get in as much driving as possible in the 3 weeks, but also a few classic car meets.  First up was the weekly Youngtimer Meet on every Thursday through the summer at Roskilde Harbour.  The turn-out was stunning, the weather equally so and it was great to bump into so many old friends there too.
And check out the breath-taking sunset over Roskilde Fjord!

The very next Saturday I followed up with yet another fab day with NullZwei and loads of good old friends.
I had arranged an early morning meet with my old mate Tore Vulpius at his home just north of Copenhagen, where he had his own Baikal Blau BMW 2002 ready for combat.

Tore lead the way onto some brilliant small backroads through serene forests.  Listening to those two double Dell'Orto carbs burble and scream up through the rev range was pure magic!   :P

We swapped cars a few times, and smiling ear-to-ear like two utter idiots we eventually stopped at the beautiful Fredensborg Palace for a quick photoshoot.

From here we headed for the coast road that leads back down towards Copenhagen.  We stopped at the historic Arne Jacobsen gas station for the weekly Cars 'N Coffee arranged by ViaRETRO.  The turn-out was again great!     Loads if dream classics and great to meet up with so many old friends and hardcore enthusiasts at a thoroughly relaxed venue.  Top prize simply had to go to the spectacular dark blue BMW M1. A lot of uncontrolled slobbering followed!!   :o   But it was actually equally cool to see Krister Hallin's newly purchased Inka Orange BMW 2000tii Touring there, as I'm pretty sure those three 02's made it a new record for most 02's at the AJ station, among all the Alfa Bertones, Porsche 911's, Jaguar E-types and Triumph TR's...

Halfway through our Danish vacation we left Sealand and my side of the family behind us, and made our way over to mainland Jutland to visit my parents-in-law.  Fine by me, as that just gave me the opportunity to drive some new roads and visit some different classic car meets than those I usually go to in and around Copenhagen.  There's a weekly summer gathering in a small village called Gammel Ry not too far from my parents-in-law.  Summer holidays meant it apparently wasn't as busy as usual, but there was still around 60 very diverse classics that rocked up - right from an immaculate '39 Cadillac Sixty Special to a mk. 1 Escort Mexico with massive bubble arches.  NullZwei was in good form as the only BMW though.

From there I enjoyed some beautiful flowing switchback roads for a roughly 80km drive up north of Aarhus to visit an old mate who had just recently purchased a farm with loads of space for classic cars and a great garage & workshop.  On the way up there I just couldn't resist another quick photoshoot as the sun was setting over the fields...

It was great to meet with my mate again and the evening (and half the night) was spent with plenty of black coffee and talking old cars and b/s in the workshop.

My last day in Denmark I spent in "AutoGalleriet" (Danish name, but I'm sure you can figure out the meaning of it on your own...     ) where I park my 02's.  NullZwei was treated to a change of oil & oil filter, extra air in the tyres and a very thorough wash and a polish.  Then parked up between my two other 02's.  That's the end of this (much too short) 02-season for me then!  Can barely wait for next summer...

Cool story!

I should know, but what wheels are those on the red car? And the last pic is a different set?

Cheers,

Ray

Stop reading this! Don't you have anything better to do?? :P

There is also the case of the vanishing grill badge!

I do like a nice grill badge...

You should start a thread about grill badges...

HaHaHaHa...     Geeeez... you guys are sharp!   ;)
Okay, so I have a confession to make.  I didn't get an "end-of-season-nicely-tucked-away" pic this year, so that last photo is actually from the previous year.  Back then NullZwei was sans grill badge and sporting a set of Italian produced 5.5x13" L.O.W. alloys with a design exactly like the Campagnolo wheels from a Miura.  Ray, the wheels on here now are a set of ultra rare German produced 5.5x13" KronPrinz alloys.  The set is still unrestored and thereby still wears the original factory black paint.  You might also recall that KronPrinz (or KPZ as they stamped their wheels) was a supplier of BMW steel wheels, though this particular set of alloys was of course only offered aftermarket.  I've never seen another set 'live', though a restored set in all-silver did come up for sale in Germany about a year ago.  I like the rarity of them just as I love that 70's retro design.  I find the blacked out parts go well with the Verona Rot paint too.

Anyhow, I'm glad you guys enjoyed the pics and write-up.  Just wanted to share the joy...   :P   Although as you said Tom, it was much too brief.
Next year I hope to get some miles on my Derby Grau '66...

Lovely cars indeed.

What wheels are on the Verona? They appear differently in the last photo?

EDIT: whoops, my mistake, reread the thread, cheers.

Thx again!   :)

And yes, Honkers sure is vastly different from Denmark!
It's an exciting place to live, but does't really offer you that homey feeling.
Also not the best place on the planet for someone deeply involved with classic cars, even though I am a member of the Classic Car Club of Hong Kong...

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
