Decal Knowledge? Pictures?

I had a fender-bender in the summer and replaced my drivers door and LF fender with OEM from BMW. I used the best BMW body shop in town, and they did a fantastic job. Amazing attention to detail. Other guy's insurance paid the bill (Ka-CHING!:-)

I checked with BMW and was told the sticker on the trailing edge of the door is NLA (for the last many years).

I'm planning on having a new one printed, but noticed that the VIN is blank. Does anyone have a VIN on their sticker? Pix please.

I talked to a "decal printer" and they can print on reflective stock, but there is a minimum order so I'm going to print extras, MANY extras. I'll post when the job is done and offer out extra decals free to those in need.

Thanks for reading and replying.

How so?

On close inspection of the sticker, I can see that it is completely perforated in circular punch-thru cuts.  But that doesn't explain how the VIN would be recognizable.  I thought that the perforation was to make the decal permanent, so as not to be removed.

Paul--I have an earlier style sticker and it also has no VIN.  I have toyed with replacing my EPA emissions label which is the same style as perforated reflective label on the door.  The easiest reproduction method would be to use a image of the actual label.  But I started (several years ago) to design labels from scratch using German DINMittelschrift, etc. fonts.  I also believed that the perforations were used to avoid tampering.  To repro the perforations, simply add a screened pattern of similar sized circles behind the lettering.  Someday I might reproduce my labels, but it takes an enormous amount of time to duplicate the originals with all the awkward word spacing and kerning.  Good luck.

Before you start reproducing anything, check with Carl over at La Jolla independent motors in North San Diego county. I do believe he has reproduced pretty much every 02 sticker and has a lot on hand.

Paul,

Late, at least '75-'76, square taillight cars appear to generally have a manufacturing date and VIN on the door label while earlier cars, particularly round taillight cars, seem to rarely have both.

You, if I recall, have a '72 or '73, so perhaps it never had a VIN on the door label. Or, as you suggest, perhaps it was applied in ink (which seems to have been the earlier style) and wore off.

The perforations referred to above are actually of two types. First, the label itself was perforated so it would "self-destruct" if someone removed it. This made the sticker more resistant to theft or "re-assignment" to another vehicle. The same self-destructively perforated stock was used for the EPA stickers on earlier cars (generally on the passenger side air plenum). Second, the date and VIN numbers, at least on late cars, were created with dot perforations.

Regards,

Steve

Thanks Steve,

Hmmm...My 73 had no VIN or M/Y of manufacture, so if I want to put it back the way it was, then the incomplete sticker is the way to go.

I'll contact La Jolla tomorrow, and take it from there.

More to come.

Paul,

I believe I previously contacted LaJolla regarding these types of decals.  The sets they sell do not include emissions and door decals (maybe that has changed).   Coupe King may also offer decals. There was another thread here discussing the security decals.

Hi Paul,

I also have an Inka 73 tii and it doesn't have any M/Y of manufature on the sticker either.  My 74tii does.  Interesting
