Well, just a quick post that a very early 1600 arrived yesterday. Number 1529682, a 1967 1600 arrived and is a proud addition to the garage. This car was one of Danny Quigley’s 02s, and is a very handsome early 6v car. It will remain in its original configuration but I will need some assistance with parts etc especially with the 6v components. And tuning the Solex + plugs.

I owned a 1966 1600-2 Vin # 1507952 before it rusted away. And. I currently own a 1967 1600-2 Vin # 1520561.

In looking at the rear view of your car it appears you have the later bumper from a 68 or later along with the later license plate lights. I've never seen a factory equipped car with the small bumperettes or bumper guards or whatever you call them paired with the large bumper guards at the rear. So, there seems to be some parts juggling on your car, or it's some type of transitional fluke between a 67-68. I don't know, but you have a very nice and clean car.

My 1530962 had the US bumper overriders and license lights from new. My family and I are really only the second owners. It was built July 4th ‘67 and was originally delivered to Harry Weber Motors, San Leandro California.

My 1528923 also had US overriders and license lights. It’s a very original car that was also originally sold new at Harry Weber Motors. It was built June 15th ‘67.

With @der Heilerin’s 1529682 being built June 22nd ‘67, between my two cars, I believe his rear bumper, license lights and center grille are correct. His front Euro bumper pieces are likely  supposed to be the larger US style. It’s a rather original car otherwise. I know a previous owner and he and I chatted about this very subject a number of times.

Tom,

Thanks for clarifying that.

To sum up what you said:

1. The factory started equipping the cars with US bumper overriders at some point during mid-67. And, it did so uniformly where they were used at both rear and front bumper.

2. At probably the same time the factory also equipped these cars with the newer style license plate lights mounted on the rear panel.

+1

And that’s consistent with my thoughts. I had a 152xxxx ‘67 1600-2 from 1974-76. Unfortunately I cannot find the complete VIN, but I remember the first three digits from ordering parts. I have nothing in my records, but for some reason I believe it was a May 1967 car. It had 54,000 miles on it when I purchased it and was in fabulous original condition. I swapped off the original hub caps and trim rings for “modern” full wheel covers. Otherwise it was original, with large (U.S.-style) front and rear overriders. Below are two of the very few photos I have focused on the car. In addition, if you ignore the totaled Sienabraun 1974 2002A in the foreground, the third photo shows the aft end of my ‘67, with U.S.-style overriders.

Regards,

Steve

A few years back I drove deep into the desert past Las Vegas to pick up an early 2002 with VIN: 1660707

I paid $2002 for it and it had what looked like a freshly rebuilt engine before it sat in the desert sun for 15 years.

Pretty early car. Wouldn't that make this the 707th 2002 manufactured?

A quick email to BMW archives netted me the info below:

Dear Mr Danco,

Thank you for your email.

The BMW 2002 US VIN 1660707 was manufactured on April 8th, 1968 and delivered on April 17th, 1968 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motors Corp. in New York City. The original colour was Granada, paint code 023.

We hope this information is helpful for you.

Yours sincerely,

Andreas Harz

Thanks, Michael,

I was looking at the forum’s Registry for answers and wishing it had a photo of your car’s aft end!

It does appear, from bits and pieces in the Registry, that Euro-spec front bumperettes and Euro-spec rear license plate lights dominate U.S.-imported 1600-2’s up to approximately April 1967. And then U.S.-spec bumpers and license plate lights take over! The record, however, is not entirely unambiguous.

The earliest ‘02 window sticker of which I have a photo is that of VIN 1527753, manufactured June 6, 1967. It shows the $8.00 option entitled “BUMPERETTES”. Subsequent Hoffman 1600-2 window stickers through at least VIN 1570400 show this option. So… were rear bumperettes possibly an option on 1600-2’s before they became “mandatory options” under the Hoffman Motors regime? And perhaps they were available before they became “mandatory options”? This would explain the ambiguous history of the period up to April 1967.

Separately, if we could get every forum member with an ‘02 to (a.) obtain their car’s build date and exterior color from BMW Group Archives, (b.) enter the car in the Registry, with the Group Archives data, and (c.) include photos in the Registry of the entire car — exterior, interior, passenger compartment, and luggage compartment — we could better estimate when factory production changes like this occurred. Wouldn’t that be great? 🙌

Best regards,

Steve

Yes, Ryan, it was the 707th U.S.-spec 2002 built! And where is this car today?

Thanks and best regards,

It's since been widebodied in carbon with fiberglass hood and trunk, and painted Manila (old photo)

Fenders and quarters were butchered when the turbo flares were fitted, hood and trunk both had rot, but body was ok. Engine was numbers matching but the front nose was also cut into and butchered.

I think it's current set up is considerably better than when we saved the car.

Why yes, yes the bumperettes were an option, even in Europe, before they were “mandatory” in the US. I’ve seen photos of Euro ‘02s with them in period.
