I bought a (polaris/black)  2002 in January 1968 from Rudy's Automotive in Houston. Paid $3050. VIN was 1661695. It had 50 miles on it because it was a demo.

Except for the air injection emission control system and sealed beam headlights, it was essentially a European car.  Euro bumpers, no side markers, painted hub caps with aluminum trim rings, no headrests, etc. Trivia point- the first 2002s had the 1600 embossed belt trim on the front, but the embossed sections were inlaid with adhesive aluminum strips that were anodized black. I drove this car until early 1975, when I sold it to by the '74 2002 (chamonix/marine blue) that I still have today.

Best regards, Ed T.

Hi, Ed,

Is there any possibility you purchased VIN 1661695 in January 1969, rather than 1968? My records show 1661695 as possibly a July 1968 car. Add 6 - 8 weeks for shipment from Germany to the Port of Houston, and some period of time as a demo. 1969 makes more sense.

VIN 1660016, the 16th U.S.-spec 2002was manufactured January 18, 1968. And I don’t believe any 2002’s reached these shores before March 1968.

The black anodized sections on the front hood trim show up on the earliest 2002 brochures, but quickly disappeared from production (below, April, May, and August 1968 2002 brochures).

Regards,

Steve

Steve, early 1600s also had the black sections on the embossed trim, correct? My car is an April '67 build but certainly doesn't have them anymore. I had read the black sections were painted?

Michael,

Although this might be debatable, I believe the early 1600-2’s only had blacked-out embossed areas on the rear panel trim, between the taillights. Their front hood trim was embossed but not blacked out. It seems to me that the blacked-out front trim on 2002’s was designed to echo the blacked-out grille — a 2002-only feature — as we see on the attached brochure, dated August 1968. (By the by, I wouldn’t be shocked if the blacked-out front hood trim had already been phased out of production by August 1968!)

Regards,

Steve

My Belgian 67 doesn't have and never had any black paint in the embossed sections of the trim, not on the front, and not on the back either. Due to the pattern in the embossing, it's highly unlikely that it all flaked off without leaving any trace whatsoever.

How about a manufacturing date? (Email your VIN to BMW Group Archives and request their data on the car — info.grouparchiv@bmwgroup.com). I’m guessing yours is the 555th RHD ‘02 built....

Here’s the reply.

Thank you for your email.

The BMW 2002 rhd VIN 1650555 was manufactured on October 08th, 1968 and delivered on November 13th, 1968 to Australia. The original colour was Sahara, paint code 006.

The blacked-out rear trim on early cars is well documented. That said, I, personally, don’t know how “early cars” is defined. And I don’t know — perhaps no one knows — whether the Belgian-assembled cars shared this feature.

02Anders, in his masterful ‘66 Bible, captures such details, but, as Anders was focused on the 1966-manufactured cars, he doesn’t discuss the end of the blacking-out feature.  Here’s the link to the ‘66 Bible on the UK forum:

http://02forum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=8603

From the ‘66 Bible, below is a screen shot of the discussion and illustration of the changing rear trim.

Following that, and not intending to imply that all production 1600-2’s were identical to the brochure car, are a couple views of an early French-language 1600-2 brochure, showing the blacked-out rear trim.

I certainly recall the blacked-out trim from the early ‘70’s, as there were a few guys who actually painted their later cars — e.g., 1969 and later — to replicate this neat detail from the earliest examples. Ironically, however, I am hard-pressed to recall definitively whether my own ‘67 1600-2 had the blacked-out rear trim. I think it did, but I can’t find a photo and I’m, honestly, not certain: I’ve looked at a lot of ‘02’s over the last 45 years! ?

Regards,

Steve
