  1. For those interested in more info on the points vs Pertronix debate there is an article by Rob Siegel ( Hack Mechanic ) on the Hagerty Insurance web site that you may find interesting. Its a good primer on the issues with both systems.   2. Thanks Brandon. I have a serviceable transmission, just need an output flange that is not dinged up.
  3. Looking for a 4 speed transmission output flange, 4 bolt, fine spline, in good condition.
  4. Is the shim there to locate the output shaft bearing or is it there to locate the place where the shaft seal rubs the output shaft , or something else?

  6. Is there a similar spacer ring for the transmission front and rear shaft seal? That would be a good thing.

  8. You can get the connector from Blunt. Be sure to get the oring too. The other end of the vacuum hose goes to a hose fitting on the intake manifold near #3 cylinder.
  9. If the output shaft splines are not visibly worn then you may be OK. Mine were obviously badly worn. Only way I know to fix the problem would be to dismantle the transmission and replace to output shaft. That is what I did. A used transmission would be much cheaper.
  10. Take a good look at the splines on the output shaft. They could also be damaged, I am sorry to say. It happened to me. This is a common problem on the pre 74 four speed transmissions. Sometime in 74 Getrag switched to much finer splined output shaft and output flange.
  11. Actually the part that seals the vacuum connector to the booster is an o ring. I had trouble installing a new connector because the o ring kept squirting out from under the flange of the connector when I rotated the connector to the stop position. The method that finally worked was to get the lugs on the connector engaged with the hole in the booster and then wait for an hour or so before turning the connector all the way to the vertical position stop.
  12. I replaced the ground wire from the battery negative terminal to the body with a heavy gage wire. That solved most of the problem I was having with the temp gage needle ticking up and down in time with the turn signals.

  14. Sorry, I wasn't clear about my previous question. If you click on browse/data bases/models and then click on the pic of the yellow BMW 2002 at the bottom right you see a listing of the colors that were available for the BMW2002. Granada 023 is not listed, but should be. Hope I am not missing something obvious here.

  16. My 71 02 ser no 1677121 came with the indented wheel with pleather trim.
  17. Turns out those shims are standard 3 mm metric washers, 7 mm OD x 3 mm ID x .5 mm thick. I found them at my local hardware store for 10 cents each.
  18. I have the opposite situation. There is more than 0.5 mm space between the end of the booster push rod and the bottom of the MC piston tube. Its more like 1/16 inch. I could add shims if I can find some. Anyone have experience as to what happens if the gap is bigger than 0.5 mm, maybe a little more play in the brake pedal? Below are pix of the booster push rod without the end piece and the end piece with washer .

This is a bit of a tangent, but I recently went to a Napa parts store which has a big automotive paint department and asked them to mix a small quantity of Granada red ( BMW 023 ) paint to use for engine bay touch up. The guy searched thru his computer systems for what seemed like a long time and finally said he could not find a recipe for that color. I showed him a can I had mixed at that store based on the color code 10 years ago. He said it looks like it has been deleted from the computer systems he has access to. He would need to custom blend the color by matching a painted part from the car. He had data for other BMW red colors like Verona ,of similar age, but not Granada. Anybody know what is going on here? Do paint codes get deleted after they get old?

  21. Cannot add anything regarding the capacitor, but if static on the AM channel is a problem then consider replacing the antenna if it is old. I had this problem with the 1970 vintage Audiovox radio in my 71 02. The guy at a local auto sound store said that antennas degrade over time and need to be replaced at some point. I was skeptical but followed the advise and replaced my 46 year old antenna. Made a huge improvement. It worked for me.
  22. +1 on what andyleonard said. I had the temp gage rise when turning on lights and gage ticking up and down with the turn signals. I had a small wire ground between the battery and the body. I added a heavy wire ground between the battery and the body and that solved 99% of the problem.
  23. And yet another original owner checking in. Purchased my 71 2002 from Belcourt Motors in Seattle in Feb 1971. Still have it and looking fwd to driving it tomorrow to my Saturday job. Congrats to all the other original owners. Be thankful that we know the history of our cars. Many others do not have that luxury. Charlie
  24. I purchased two door brakes from Harry6422 ( creativesales@gmail.com ) several years ago. I believe they are Mercedes parts. This thing works on a detent ball mechanism. They have much better holding power than the original brakes. I installed one in my drivers side door in 2009 and have had no problems since then. It worked for me. Charlie
