I think you're right.  The '73 bumper most likely went on with the nose change.  I'm partial to the 73 overriders, so I think I'll keep them.   Maybe I'll find the brackets to tuck the bumper in closer though.

Thanks again for the great info.

And, Tim, your car has shallow grilles, which should be correct for a July 1972 ‘02!

Regards,

Steve

Well, Tim, the grilles are correct for the car.  The deep grilles, which began in 1966 were replaced — for U.S.-spec cars only — early in the 1972 calendar year.  So, from that point on, 1972 and 1973 model year U.S. cars shared the same shallow grilles.

(So the grilles could have come from a 1973, or from another later 1972.)

Regards,

Steve

But the 1972 tii is the best example I have of this disregard for the general assembly line shutdown in August. BMW manufactured 2,629 1972 U.S.-spec tii’s, from VIN 2760001 to 2762629. The earliest one for which I have a BMW Archives date is Tom Jones’ parents’ (original owner) tii, VIN 2760007 (manufactured October 20, 1971). I mention this only because perhaps this end-of-October start to the tii model year plays some role in the manufacture of 1972 U.S.-spec tii’s well into August 1972. I’m showing BMW Archives dates for VIN 2762618 (manufactured August 8, 1972) and VIN 2762621 (manufactured August 14, 1972). Perhaps the final eight 1972 tii’s were manufactured on or around this latter August 14, 1972 date.

Thus, after your car, VIN 2762344, was manufactured on July 28, 1972, they produced nearly 300 more 1972 tii’s.

The last note on this, my second point, is that the first 1973 U.S.-spec tii, VIN 2762630, was manufactured October 6, 1972. It almost appears that U.S. tii production started late and ended late in the general model year. Curiously, the earliest 1974 U.S.-spec tii, for which I have a BMW Archives date is VIN 2780046 (manufactured November 19, 1973). Did the “lag” in tii production years carry over into the 1974 model?

BMW 2002 tii US VIN 2762626 was manufactured on August 16th, 1972 and delivered on August 22nd, 1972 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motors Corp. in New York City. The original colour was Malaga.

Thanks, but we really need more than a VIN and a (current? factory?) color!

Please email those VIN’s to the BMW Group Archives (info.grouparchiv@bmwgroup.com) and request their data on the three cars. At no cost, and generally within two business days, you’ll have precise manufacturing dates for all three (along with Archives confirmations of the original colors).

Share with us here and/or place those three cars in this forum’s Registry!

Thanks and regards,

Steve

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
