Floor inspection help

I have to say I’m pretty happy with my initial impressions of the floor pan after removing tar sheets. I’m not one for cutting corners but trying to decide if I want to remove the sound deadening over tunnel to treat underneath considering how well preserved. I’ve seen folks saving and reapplying after treatment but based on current state I’m wondering if it’s worth pulling at all. Thoughts?

Leave it on the tunnel.  These cars were quiet from the factory, noise is coming from other places.

A radiator shop is a good place to take a leak.

 

I have no idea what I'm doing but I know I'm really good at it.

It depends.  If you have the original 4 speed, then I would say let it ride, but if it was "clearanced" for the 5 speed, then I would take a peek. 

 

Mine had a 5 speed put in shortly after I got it, and even being a California car, the hammering made the metal paper thin and it rusted.  If you take a look at the pictures below, somone drilled two big holes in the transmission tunnel just forward of the two bolts holding the cross member in for the 5 speed. (sorry it is hard to see unless you zoom in) 

 

It was pounded out and not covered up, hence me breaking down and getting a quart of POR and taking care of the surface rust that gathered under the sound proofing.  You don't know what is lurking there and with 45 min work you could clean in out and have it ready to receive modern sound dampening. 

 

That being said your floors look really really good.   I am doing this so I don't have to do it again, or the folks that will inherit my car after I have gone T**S up.. like the "Colonel" ( Min 1:27)

thanks @Dudeland yes planning to stick with OG 4 spd tranny. Good to know about the 5 speed tho for others or perhaps myself in the future.

+1 on that suggestion; unmolested tunnels rarely rust--primarily due to oil leaks from the engine and tranny coating 'em. 😉

 

Once you have the footwells all cleaned out of the OEM tarpaper, and they're all nicely painted, instead of more tarpaper sound deadening, get some scraps of household carpet padding--get some that's marked "pet proof" as they have a moisture barrier so incontinent dogs and cats pee doesn't soak into the pad--neither will water so they won't hold it.  The carpet padding makes a nice sound deadener, and you can pull it up to inspect the floor periodically so it won't rust without you knowing it.

Use truck bed liner on the floors after priming and you can use the floor as a swimming pool for ever and it will make your 2002 bomb proof if you encounter a land mine,

I bought a Raptor liner kit to do trunk, entire cab and engine bay, might buy another one and do the entire bottom of the car but that will be later fixing my car one section at a time.

Hey Mike, I've seen you mention this before. Curious 2 things. Is there a target thickness? Thinking about how hard laying carpet over top will be. Also do you tack it down at any point with glue or will the carpet simply hold it in place?  Thanks

I usually used 7/16" padding but 3/8 works OK too.  It doesn't need to be fastened down; I just cut holes in the padding where the carpet snaps are located so they'll be functional.  

 

I started doing this back in 1965 when I discovered the padding under the rubber mat on my Renault was some kind of jute padding that held water like a sponge, and was rusting my floor.  I scraped all the loose rust, painted the floor with Rustoleum primer (back when it really was a rust inhibitor) and then black enamel, and installed carpet paddng.  The paint is still nice and shiny today (yeah, I still have the car).

 

Just make sure what you get is the kind that doesn't hold water ("pet proof").  You can usually scrounge it from the dumpster behind a carpet store...
