  1. Thks for the mention but you can see the rear quarter looks terrible. I'll paint it correct color not really a big deal
  2. I'm in the process of color correction on the paint that somewhere in 48years it was painted with unknown quality/quantity of paint. I buffed a sample of all the panels to see how it would look and take the process. It seemed to be ok and matched what I painted(sunroof, lower right door and right wing. Color sanded with 3000 grit by hand(I would use DA if it was my paint but since it was a bit unknown I did it by hand) . Then it was buffed with lambswool pad and Mequiars 105 compound. I will use finishing compound once I'm done with the whole car. Pretty pleased so far. You can see in pic 2 where the hood and the wing match at least reasonably well. I use TCP single stage urethane which is really pretty reasonably priced. I've used it on all the cars I've painted as well as cheap ass Harbor Freight gun painted exactly where you see it sitting-outside. Unfortunately because it's looking this good its forced me to have to paint the rfight rear quarter since someone painted it the wrong color orange. It might be Colorado Orange I'm just not sure.Anyway now that the car is starting look good I think it deserves a respray there the correct orange even though I really want to be out there driving.
  3. Is it just me or should there be more clearance between the button and the end of the console? I notice this on mine.
  4. My first car was a '74 Honda Civic. By the time I got it in '81 it was already thoroughly rusty. My sister got it when I left and she gave it back to my Dad when she left. As I understand it he gave it to a friend from work who gave it to his son and...promptly ran it out of oil. D'oh! I guess my overall point was that I expected my later model BMW to have less rust than earlier cars I restored but it had just as much if not more rust. Granted I was far more judicious in my choices of VWs and Porsches than my '02 as I rolled the dice believing that it's a Cali car how bad could it be? Lesson learned.
  5. "Man they ain't nothin' wrong with points"...
  6. I'm curious about rust in these old cars I've dealt with. Granted it's a small sample of VW,Porsche from 60's and now BMW on my '76. Were there car models of all brands in that timespan that werent rusty buckets of scheisse in 10 years?
  7. I feel the same way about Honda.I've never had less than 200k with serious issues( manual transmissions and pre direct injection models of course).
  8. Mike do you go to the Pittsburgh Grand Prix?
  9. I just did this about 2 months ago. When I took out the tank that shelf was toast as well as most of the box beam underneath. I cut out all the rust and fabbed a little box slightly shorter than the original and welded it to the nub that remained.I also welded it to the shelf that went on top of it.It was stiff as a board.Hope this helps.
  10. Well inka, dinka do!!! now that that's done the debate will rage in me nugget on whether to paint that middle rear quarter as it appears to me some geezer in the past shot it with Colorado orange. It's not a match but I really want to be on the road. Maybe I could just do it this Fall before putting the car away for the Winter. Or leave it.Or do it now. ad infinitum
  11. yeah that whole under the carpet thing was a bad day for me!
  12. I'm not new to painting but new to blending. Well it's done anyway. I looked on YouTube didn't see much. No worries. I'm done. May play around with experimenting with blending scraps after I'm done with this car.
  13. I am paint lower part of door below the trim all the way. Also the entire front right fender. I am not a pro painter and have painted several cars but never any partial cars.It seems that blending single stage isnt a thing either at least what I could find so I looked for best mask off points like trim etc to paint the entire section. Its single stage acrylic urethane from TCP Global. I've used it many times before and I like it. Paint match I cant tell at this point.I just shot the fender with primer this morning and will shoot color tomorrow.Hopefully its ok. Im not holding out for total factory match and I'm sure as heck not painting the entire car.
  14. Progress! right wing and lower door to go...
  15. What are the two sticks to the left of the weapon?

  17. ....drain your bank account. So true!
  18. At first I thought roundie all the way but after owning a square I do like square better
  19. Oh boy here we go.... Let me take a few moments to explain that I believe the '02 is a very attractive car and um... yes I will relate it to persons of a certain sex.+You know if you look critically at the '02 I think you realize that in the wrong designers' hands this could have completely fallen over to look like some turd from the Eastern Bloc. Luckily that did not happen but to say it is classically stunning like say Porsche 356,Aston Martin DB4,(pick your favorite 60's Euro sports car) isnt quite the case.. Anyone can look at (in their prime) Meg Ryan,Sage Steele,Andy MacDowell(again pick your favorite star) and admire the obvious beauty. The '02 is not that. Wait for it....The '02 is Meryl Streep. Yes I said it!!!! Maybe not a classic beauty and maybe even seems a bit "off" ie so much glass, long trunk, boxy but taken as a whole is quite attractive. In fact maybe even more attractive because of it.
