Paint and bodywork guidance

Got a call from the bodyshop today with some pictures. Are these welds on the fenders or did they weld the fenders to the body?

I may consider upgrading these also 😁:

John,

The rear “ear” on the fender (circled in blue below), which is bolted and screwed to the A pillar, is part of the fender itself. So the welding you’re viewing is on the fender itself, and was done before the fender was attached to the chassis.

Best regards,

Steve

Thanks Steve, we were discussing a few other spots when I brought up the fenders and must have just assumed they were welded in place on first glance. It's a quality shop, but I guess this is the stuff you have walk through since they haven't done a lot of 2002's

Fortunately, for the B-pillars I sent them some cut outs from a later car for the 3-point seat belts.

Good solution, John!

Your current B-pillar solutions are a bit… sketchy! 😯🙄

Best regards,

Steve

John,  common point for me is making sure the schutz lines are correct.  In addition to the rockers, this also goes for the spare tire well, and back panel in the trunk.

Andrew, the car is going to primer soon. Can you (or anyone else) provide a few more details on the best way to explain the correct schutz lines? I am very happy with the work so far, but as I mentioned they have only done a few 2002's, so I want to provide as much specific information as possible. Fortunately this car is very "authentic" in that there was virtually no body work done to it previously so even though there were dents, dings, and some rust present it was never covered up.

I'll be hitting this myself soon (I hope) and wondering if anyone knows how much stoneguard (Worth 14oz bottles shown) are required for at least the front and rear aprons plus the sides under the doors? I'm thinking at least 2.

Wheel wells would add more but I don't need it I don't believe.

All guidance appreicated!

Just received the first pics after paint! They still have to do the hood, but I am looking forward to seeing it all back together. Before anyone gets their feathers all ruffled, yes its Granada 023 red, and no its not perfect but its a car I plan to use a lot and I am very happy with the results. The goal was to repair all the dents, dings and any rust spots to make it as nice as possible, but not concours. The car was so dry, that we really only needed to repair a few rust spots mainly on the valence and spare tire well and repairing the weird radiator cut out. The whole underside was done as well with texture and fresh paint. Hoping to pick it up in a week or two and share more pictures!

John, glad to hear it.  Looking forward to some color.

Bergie,  hopefully these help.  Pictures show exactly where the lines should be.

Andrew,

I looked at your photos. Nice work!
It looks like you may have either primed over the original paint/body Schutz or shot a grey chip guard in the fender wells before spraying the green tinted product. Am I seeing that right? If you did prime over the original paint/body Schutz what was your process for cleaning up the fender wells?

Just curious. I’m about to start a similar project.

Thank you.

If you look back at pictures "file_004 and file_005" on the oldest page, you can see the extent to which the shell was blasted in those areas with the fenders removed.  Anywhere where rust was a potential concern we blasted to bare metal.  The face of the panels where no new welds were was left with coating.  It was then all primed, then coated.

Note the "corrosion" near where the frame rails are, is just from the seam welding we did on the other side.

So, generally yes, it's as you say, except there was still a lot of material removed in the wheel well where needed.

John, looks like a lot of fun reassembly is getting nearer and nearer!  Congratulations.
