Dark colors tend to hide those seams.

On my ‘76, bought new, spending most of its years in Pennsylvania, and accumulating 100,000 miles from 1976-83 — when I took it out of daily driver service — I replaced the right fender in 1978 after an accident and I replaced both fenders in 2015 due to rust. The photo below is how my car looked during every snow storm from 1976 to 1983.  I don’t consider an item that might be replaced every 40 years to be a “regular maintenance item,” and certainly wouldn’t leave an open seam so that someone can save a couple hundred bucks — maybe — on the 2055 restoration…


My view. ?

I don’t know, Jim, call me the Profligate Youth, but I’ve never re-painted a car with thoughts of “How can I make the next accident repair easier?”

 

I plan to not wreck, and will cross the “I-wrecked” bridge when I actually get to it. And I’m guessing that my insurance company is picking up the tab unless the damage is minor — how else do I recoup the insane NY and NJ insurance rates I pay!

 

Pretty wild for a former CPA… ?

I didn’t plan on wrecking either…. Grundy Insurance covered the entire thing. They dispatched an estimator from Virginia (since they are based in PA).

Agree 100%.  Very difficult to grab when seated.  I did route the driver’s belt beneath the headrest post.

If your paint shop is not familiar with the nuances of the BMW 2002, it's a good idea to ask for a final inspection before it goes in the spray booth.  My painter had done over a dozen cars for Bill Holmes before spraying my 1975 Mintgrun car so I was pretty confident that they about the seams on these cars.  Didn't get a final walkthrough before the booth, ended up with this...

So here is a shot of the underside I took yesterday. The car was a 1-owner, and never fully repainted, but I’m sure it’s had some work over the years. I’m guessing this is close to original type of primer with some overspray? @1936spyder @Conserv @uai ?

Yes, this looks original, John. Almost looks like Malaga paint, but I suppose it’s Granada with smart phone color correction. The color coat overspray, because it’s so light, often comes out as a very different — lighter — color.

@JohnP_02 here’s a shot of my ‘73 Malaga not too long after I cleaned the undercarriage. I don’t have anything closer but I think you can tell that the exposed primer is pretty much the same color:

Any ideas on how to deal with rocker crust on the seams? It’s not rusted all the way through or enough to have to replace them, but how else would you get in there without at least cutting a hole in the side? Or do I need to consider replacing?
