Advice needed

First of all, welcome to the 02 Fraternity/Sorority.  Lots of good advice and expertise on the board, so ask away.

Most all the trim pieces outside and inside are available either new, reproduced or used.  It's amazing what's still available for our cars.  Check the for sale section of the FAQ for used stuff, and some of our advertisers for new.

And...the archive search is your friend.

cheers

A couple of useful links below… availability will depend on what you need. As the prices of these cars have gone up, so has demand for restoration parts. This in turn has depleted the inventory of some parts, and created a market for reproductions of others. You will likely need to explore all of the sources out there (vendors, salvagers, resellers, swap meets, classifieds here on the faq, etc). Welcome and good luck searching.

Welcome!

Impulse buys are how I get most of my... projects.

My advize is to REALLY dig at the underside, looking for rust.

This will be a good exercise in using the search, too, as there

are a couple dozen threads on rust repair that will guide you on

where to poke.

Once you've got a good assessment of the shell, THEN worry about

the mechanics, starting with the brakes.  A fluid change, pad check,

and rubber hose evaluation.

Now electrics- the connection at the battery seems to ALWAYS be a mess,

and the POs will have pos'd things, and may have had help from mice.

Fuel line.  Oil leaks.  Engine mounts- both the rubber and the metal brackets

the rubber bolts to.

Suspension ends and pivots.  When tight, the 2002 handles as well as

anything that ever was designed with rack- and- pinion.

Engine- compression and leakdown.  As long as you have some, it's all good.

If you only have 3 out of 4, THEN it's a problem.

Finally, the cosmetics.  I say this because I've had several cars- one is worth

all new upholstery and trim and carpets, one wasn't worth washing, and then there

were a bunch of 'drivers' that got the 'best of the rest'

parts in descending order.  With the exception of a rusty rat that got all the

handling parts because if it went off in 3B, I'da just left it there.

Welcome to the club.

There is a lot of fun stuff that you can do to these cars.   I mostly follow Toby's and Ray's advice and I have never regretting doing so.

With supply chains being what they are,  make sure that you have the part in hand before you go hog wild.

Spend some time searching the forums, all the answers are there, but sometimes hard to find.   Make the effort to read them before you post, you will get a more positive response.

Pictures .. always pictures,  or better yet  videos in your posts.  Many times people will be chasing down one problem and we as a community see something else that you should address.

The only thing I would do without even blinking is replace the rubber lines with braided stainless ones.  They are likely brittle, may be the source of a soft peddle or a dragging brake.  Ireland Engineering is where I got mine, Blunt is another well respected supplier, depending on where you live, you may prefer one based on shipping.   OEM is normally a good choice, but sometimes hard to find or NLA (no longer available).  Once you start doing one thing, then it just kicks the performance can down the road to the next weakest link (ask me how I know).  My car was already a bit of a mutt when I got it, so I kinda ran with that theme.

... and yes.. there is one thing you need to know.  :)

Unfortunately Ray got robbed.  I am not sure of what, or when,  what is important is that we acknowledge,  respect and console him confident in the fact that Ray was robbed, and that is all we need to know.

( An inside joke of which I am not a member)

Welcome.

Regards

There are a couple guys in the parts for sale section who part out 2002's. They usually have pretty much every piece you could need.

Also many parts are available brand new for a price.

1976 BMW 2002 Chamonix. My first love.

1972 BMW 2002tii Polaris. My new side piece.

Oh- DRIVE the darned thing.  Before you work on it, and

as you finish each project.  Because positive reinforcement is a lot more fun

than trying to power through the whole thing in one go.

learnt that one the hard way, too.
