Does my neck look weird?

Bought a fancy Kooglewerks fuel filler. Tried to install on my '73 Tii. Failed.

When I line up the holes in the flange with the holes in the quarter panel, the fuel filler tube isn't really close to fitting in the neck of my gas tank.

Does my gas tank and its neck look normal?

The website shows a silicone adapter and two different styles for early or late cars. Did you get the right style and was the silicone adapter included?

Yes and yes.
The rubber elbow adapter included in the kit is a tight fit in the best of circumstances but this is an alignment issue.

I remember speaking w Forrest about my 1970 tank b4 ordering. There was some discussion about later tanks but I forget. Call him. 
 

my issue is w the side panels.  The original plywood trunk floor is too big now.  Pressing against them?  Heat gun to form them closer to the fender?

Really weird alignment issue for sure. Smart to move to the wider mouth filler in general.

CA gas nozzles don't play nice with the original filler. I was carrying around an adapter but I thought this would be a more elegant solution. 

 

I've been in touch with Forrest and he's been very responsive. Looks like I will have to send it back.

Your gas tank looks normal for a later car.

 

That filler looks like it'd work for an earlier car.

There are two different tanks used on carbureted 2002s--early cars  have a short metal neck on the tank and a long connecting hose that's shaped like a submarine periscope.  Later cars (like yours) that have the bolt-in retainer that surrounds the filler neck have a much longer neck on the tank, and a very short, only slightly curved connecting hose.  Looks like you have a Koogleworks filler that's meant for an early car, but you have a late one. 

 

I think the changeover was made with the beginning of the modell 71 cars, those with 257/8/9XXXX VINs..

Hi Mike - this car is an early '73 Tii, vin 2762913. Interesting stuff - no record of it having a tank change but could it be one of those interim cars?

Model 71 was a midyear change-

12 fuses, dash change, etc, and it happened in mid- 71.  Of production.

 

Your fender shows the later tank style attachment,

and that fits with it being a post- 71.5 car.

 

Like Mike and TobyB, I think they sent you the early version, for the short necked tank.

Thanks everyone. My tank is correct for my car, so looks like they sent me the wrong filler. Forrest has been great-- I'm going to send back the filler and I'm sure it'll get worked out.
