VIN Decals in door

tii74

Recommended Posts

Another example of a door sticker I found filtering through my archives of pictures, a "b" label dated 06/74 with perforations. A tii pretty sure, since carb'ed 74's VINs started with 422xxxx. Narrowing down the versions and when the changes occurred of the various door stickers.

I received my VIN door decal from Car Bone today (1st photo). They had to modify the design that they had on file, by adding "USA", but did not charge extra for that. I based the modification on the door decals from VIN 2760749 and 2761616 (2nd & 3rd photo).

It looks very good, Tony!  It’s probably time for me to order one for my VIN 2762757: neither the manufacturing date nor the VIN is clear on mine (below) .... ?

Your “USA” version illustrates yet another (authentic) version of the federally-mandated sticker. We must be up to at least five versions by now.

Best regards,

Steve

Steve, you may have noticed that the door decal for VIN 2760749 shows a manufactured date of 2/72 even though the vehicle was actually manufactured shortly before my car’s manufactured date of 01/28/1972.

Based on that, it made sense to me that my door decal should also show a manufactured date 2/72, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it. I figured I would always have some “splainin” to do if the decal did not match the actual date of manufacture. Perhaps the dates on the decals reflect the month and year that the vehicles were staged for shipment. My car was “delivered” on 02/10/1972.

Regards,

Tony

Me too.  I love that your tii is 201 cars older than mine. Closest sibling I've encountered.

And yours, Paul, gives me a goal: the way mine will look when the topside returns to Inka!

The only substantial Inka mine shows presently is on the underside and in the trunk.... ?

First photo shows my Inka VIN 2762757 currently disguised as a Malaga example to keep the crowds at bay...

Oh, yeah, Delia’s old ‘73 tii was VIN 2762758, on the assembly line next to mine (?) and also a factory Inka car.

Best regards,

Steve

here is the one I received from Carbone, weird they took off the  2002tii on the first line, I guess because my car is only a 2002 ?,, I'll live with it,

The “c version” stickers, Russell, eliminated the tii, probably because the tii was no longer imported into the U.S. when the c version was introduced. Below is my original c version. I believe the 1974 models originally used the “b version” stickers, which retained the 2002tii heading.

Don’t worry: we won’t tell and no one will notice!

I don’t know, Tony, but I’m still not bothered by a car that should have been manufactured on Friday, January 28, 1972 being completed on, say, Tuesday, February 1, 1972 — and thus getting a “2/72” VIN sticker.  Wasn’t that the Friday the guys were “toasting the weekend” at lunch and, afterward, Helmut dropped a subframe on the last box of tii clocks....?

Best regards,

Steve

My indoctrination to the cult was a Malaga 73tii in 1985.  I drove it hard for 3 years without a hiccup.  When I decided to put sheet metal on the floor cuz I could see the road beneath my feet, I finally noticed that it was originally Inka.  Go figure.  In hindsight I bet a PO was very conservative and hated orange.  Maybe the opposite of orange is burgundy. :P

. . . pretty clean  sticker from the ‘71 1602 (vin 1572273) Skeeter is mulling over purchasing right now (see recent posts).  At least it was until some heavy handed painter got ahold of it.

Perhaps judicious use of thinner or acetone with a cotton swab will clean that up.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
