There are many threads on turbo style fenders but not nearly as much information on rabbit fenders, and even less info on installing them.
I was hoping that if you have vw rabbit fenders on your car you could post some photos please. A couple Beauty shots and maybe one or two closer up of the front and rear fenders. I know it would have made me feel a lot more confident when figuring out the placement on mine if there was a collection of pics and info.
I'm just about done with mine but still have a little bit of tie in work to do in the rear on the bottoms.
I have 13" wheels on mine now and plan to jump up to 15" further down the road along with sport suspension but for now while I still have this project going I installed wheel spacers to flush the tires up and started the spring cutting process. I cut a half coil today and I'll reassess the height next week.
I don't mind the height now but it would probably look better about an inch lower.
And my apologies if there is already a thread like this that I missed.
Last 2 pics are before I cut springs (just to show my placement).
If anyone is interested here's the fenders I used. They were very cheap, only $115 for all 4!

Try the search terms "Rabbit flares"-- there were a few threads, but it's been a long time.

 

I kinda like it too.  Take your time on making the transitions as smooth as you can, and don't

be afraid to use more metal, and shape the metal you have.

I spent many, many hours researching, reading threads and watching videos. I read pretty much every single post that even slightly mentioned them before pulling the trigger on the project. I wasn't 100% totally sure i even wanted to keep the o2 until I came across a few pics of them with the vw fenders fitted and then I was hooked on the car and the look. I contemplated welding them on with butt joints but that wouldn't have allowed much for a margin of error and considering that I'm no pro welder I decided to lap weld them on, grind smooth and next will be to follow with body filler. I'm confident that the end result will be nice. I'm just learning body work as I go.
I couldn't even imagine what the fender job would cost at a body shop let alone all the other things I've done so far like welding trim and antenna holes up, rust repair and bumper tucks. I'm glad I can work with my hands because If not i would never be able to afford all the things I want in this world!

I hear you there!  If I didn't do it myself, I couldn't afford to have someone else do it for me.

(usually,  Then there's the pride factor...)

 

Since you lapped (and yes, butting has a REAL propensity to shrink, especially when the 2 surfaces are not in plane)

just spend some real time on the backsides to make sure they're sealed up nice and tight.  Then you should be just fine.

Could you post some good shots of your flares for the thread? 

Same here about the pride of doing it comment.

I'm not one for stickers on my rides but I'm tempted to get the "built not bought" sticker... (more than likely will not though.)

Since this forum has helped me immensely in the restoration of my 02 (yet to be finished, but close) I always try to give back when I can. Here are some pics of my progress with the rabbit flares. From mock up stage, to welded, primed and painted. I know its not for the purists, but I liked the idea of being able to get some wider rubber in the wheel wells!

These pics are priceless for someone looking to do this project. Did you custom make the piece of trim that runs along the sides under the doors?
You did a great job!
It looks like you left a little more meat on the car in rear above the fender than I did.
