Scott- your wife noticed the Jag because she has been used to seeing your tii for a LONG time.  Now if you perhaps had a second one of another color, maybe she would appreciate it (the tii) even more!  Would my logic work?

The XK-E is gorgeous. But to me, the cabin is tight and the shifter a little weird.  Old gas in British cars smells rancid, no matter how much you clean the fuel system.  The tilt front end comes mighty close to the ground. Those exhaust tips are tough to get aligned properly.  This coming from the guy who can't get a stock 2002 muffler to work properly?.

The shop I spent time messing around had a 6 cylinder XK Jag that the customer wanted DCOE carbs instead of the factory fuel injection. Somehow the mechanic got it to run well. Too bad the power window switches caused so many headaches. Would hate to see the final invoice.  Prince of Darkness hung around the XJ-6 many times.

Every make of car has a unique smell, especially the older ones, and those smells tend to imprint on us, good or bad.  MG, Triumph, Austin/Jensen Healey, Lotus, Mercedes Jag, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Alfa, BMW, even DeLoreans have their own smell.  True, some of them, perhaps several of the British cars, have less pleasant smells, but the memories can be pretty good.  Weird, but true.

Meh, if I were to own another jag, I think it would have to be a 1964-1967 MkII.  They are cool, fun and still relatively cheap.  But like all of the old Jags, the kingpins on the front wheels are exactly at center so the wheel does not return to straight when you let go like it does in a modern car.  My mom discovered that in a catastrophic way when she was driving her's home from the dealer.  :-)

Take care!

Jim, no I don't think it would work.  Good thought, though.  My wife is a car person; she just isn't a 2002 person.  Never has been.  When she saw that Jaguar, she was picturing herself behind the wheel - thinking "yeah I could love that car".   She saw an early '70s 911 and asked me how much those were to buy.  She has good (and expensive) taste, I guess.

There's always potential to get another fun and/or old car.  With our son in college, our transportation needs are being met by the X5, which is perfect for the all-season midwest road trips we are taking for the kid.  But after those years are over...then we'll know what we really need and want.  We won't need a car as big as the X5.  We both work from home, so we don't need a commuter, but that could always change, too.  If one of our businesses tanks...or a great opportunity comes along...change can always happen.

I'd like to get a convertible; she hates convertibles.  We might settle on something like an E36 or E46 M3.  Maybe even a 335i hardtop convertible.  Or a 911 Targa from the '80s or '90s.  Who knows?  She was against having a second BMW, but when she drove the X5, she got over that quickly, and now loves it.  So that was a good mini breakthrough.

Sorry for the over-share.

If anyone following this thread is really itching to get their hands on one of these, here is a current auction on Bring a Trailer.  This is a well sorted series 2 car.  (No headlight covers, late style tail lights, but no fender flares yet). This one has the 4.2 litre engine in it and 2 carbs instead of the earlier 3.  Overall, easier to maintain.

Here is a later 2+2 series 3 with the V-12.  Note the longer chassis and higher roof line.

Series 3 2+2

Take care!

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
