Missed you today.  I see you got a picture of mine. Did you have your 2002 there?

I guess I need to walk around more ?  There are so many cars rotating in and out, it's hard to see them all.

I thought you might see this so I posted it. I was there with my son and tried to find you. I arrived around 0740 or so. I left around 0930 and there were a lot of folks still rolling in which was surprising but the early rain scared some folks away. I was parked in the second row from the entrance. You were only a row or two past me. Maybe we'll meet next time. Great looking car.

Warning: somewhat emo post.

My 1969, Dolores, is on ice. I canceled the insurance and moved it to the garage this week as it’s about to be stripped for full restoration and a return to its native Atlantik Blau.

I left the new Verona ‘75, Rolf, at home in the driveway after a decent week of daily driving.

Instead, I worked on the 1965 Imp today at the garage with my garagemate, Seth. We have been making early mornings at the garage a ritual last few weeks as I try to stop myself from drinking too much at night.

We are trying to sort an issue of the engine wanting to die when in gear and under any sort of load. It idles cleanly and can rev like a 998cc Coventry Climax engine should when in neutral, but we have to ride the clutch when in gear or else it wants to die with any load applied. We now think is the electronic ignition thing... there’s a knowledgeable and friendly ‘North American Impers’ FB group we’ve been asking for help... apparently there’s only 50 imps in the US.

But in the meantime, we replaced the Imp’s single barrel Solex carb with an almost new one in case the issue was a clogged jet not able to spray more fuel when under load.

The carb worked after a little fuel priming and we could idle and rev fine in neutral, but the same issue persisted when we tried to put it in reverse.

We left the garage at noon without a solution, as it was already hot in Sylmar and Seth had a marriage counseling appointment. He’s also had a rough couple of weeks.

Funny how in our mid 30s, both in technology jobs, we find ourselves turning to the therapy of working with our hands on cars our fathers’ age, fighting the same demons our fathers and grandfathers warned us about.

Simple, mostly analog, problems feel tangible and solvable. Thank God for weekends, air, fuel and spark and their healing properties.

Here’s a few requested photos of the 1965 Sunbeam Imp LHD from Kentucky, Rose Marie, as she sits. And a couple of inspiration shots of where we will take her.

I would love to own a Hillman Imp. My friend had a heavily modified Imp when we were teenagers. That thing was amazing.

I shaded it.

:D

I did a fair job, considering I'd not done it before.

It's this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07H7VJBZY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

70% transmittance. I ordered the above piece for the rear glass. Front can't be legally tinted here.

Cheers,

Finished welding in the new rocker.

Pulled the pedal box/wiring/insulation from the engine bay.

Stared at the front of this car for a hour or so from different angles. Sometimes just running my fingers across valleys and crests that don’t belong, Sometimes with a level and measuring tape in hand, Sometimes just staring blankly pondering how I can make this car straight again.

The pass side frame rail

In addition to being bent up (appears to deviate from factory by about 15mm) it’s also twisted radially...

The firewall on the pass side of the trans tunnel is caved in a bit... ?

What a mess...

I know everybody dislikes it, but tint makes it so much nicer to be in the car.

Life is interesting sometimes...

It is.  I wish our society didn't segregate (everything) our generations so much.  I feel there is a lot that can be learned from other people of other ages that have been through different situations, and the exact same situations.

In the mean time, eat healthy food and get some exercise.

Suppose there's two things to think about (apparently I'm feeling philosophical this morning...)

1.  Old enough to ask the question, old enough to hear the answer.

B.  Maybe some questions just shouldn't be asked.

I don't know bud, you sure are putting in a lot of work for a car that you think you're not going to care about...

Irdave- THIS car is absolutely one that I care about. This is my first series ‘68. The car I typically post about is the ‘73 that I’m “saving for my 3yo son”. It’s Mostly for me, but my wife finds it more palatable if I say that’s gonna be his car some day.

A few thoughts from the last 24hrs:

1) Perhaps this tub is too mangled to save.

2) I’ve already cut up one early tub (‘69)... I’m not sure that I have the stomach to do it again.

3) Is there a body shop around me with a frame machine that would actually do a good job to pull the front end straight.

4) Perhaps some I-beams and supplies and I’d make my own pulling frame.

5) Building a jig for a frame rail to remove and straighten (or fabricating from new) these (and others) on.

6) Removing the nose should make moving these rails/panels easier.

Just some of what’s rolling around between my ears.

I think I lost my draft...

Here's a comparison on the tint vs. the silly SUV (stock) and neighbor's Charger (I dunno). I was hoping the car would have come out less dark, but I'm looking forward to a cooler interior.

Pretty sure 3M makes a ceramic film with higher light transmittance but I wasn't going to spring for it.

Since the vendor sent me enough free sample film to ultimately do all the side glass, I'm in for a total of about $65 including the rear glass film (ordered) and the installation kit. And a sliced index finger ?

Cheers,

I think I’ll use this stuff on my IH before retrofitting it w/ A/C. It’s not really tint appropriate either imo.

No worries. People call it “The ‘Mater truck” all the time. I enjoy that it makes people smile.
