Roundel Restoration

Driv3r

Recommended Posts

I went ahead and bought a spare used metal roundel from eBay Germany for restoration practice.

After speaking with a few hobby shops specialised in model airplanes, I was told to use Mr Color lacquer paint then use two coats of uv protective clear (lacquer). These paints are made for outdoors.

I also bought lacquer thinner based on the instructions I read here but after using the first colour, I realised there was no need for thinner. Mr Color paints are made for a smooth surface finish and they are premixed with thinner.

Here are the items I bought and they are available in US. (All products are made in Japan). Paint code numbers are visible.

Photo here is taken before applying the clear coats. Great results. [emoji482]

In the Porsche world they pay BIG BUCKS for badges that are well worn. I have a Roundel that has zero paint left on it. I'm going to put it back on that way. I think it is way cool.

That emblem on the right is so wrong!

That's how the come from BMW now. I have got one and the font on the BMW bothers me as I am sure it is not quite right.

This roundel that I bought had old paint. I used pure acetone to remove old paint and it came right off to bare shiny metal.

I was thinking of polishing the metal and use it without the paint but after test fitting it something didn't look right, so I went with original painted look.

BMW Classic should be sick to see the "new" badge  - there is no way the font & color resemble what was originally found on the car.

That new badge pictured above on the right is closer to the color BMW used on their cloisonne enamel badges taht were fitted on older cars prior to the NK sedans.  Isettas had cloisonne badges on their front doors, as did 507s, and, oddly enough, the 2000CS coupes on the C pillars--but the hood and trunk badges were painted aluminum like the NK and 02 cars.

The painted badge on the left is the current color.

PS--if you want to use Testors model airplane paint on your roundel the blue is #1111.

  • 5 months later...

Roundels for my '65 NK have yellow cad colored metal and paint on the flat parts.  The lettering is old school like in the picture above, but raised.  Does anyone know a source where these could be sent for restoration?  Thanks, Bill
