What did you pay for your 2002???

I think taking a car from a 5 to a 8+ across interior, exterior, mechanical will cost $5-10K (or more). So, that needs to be factored in.

Stupid crazy deals aside, my general rule is that for any given model of vintage car, the less you pay for a bmw, the more it will cost you.

*Purchase price (in USD please)= free (+1/2 engine rebuild cost)

*Purchase date= n/a

*Mileage= ~100k miles

*State of purchase= Nova Scotia Canada

*Model year= 1973

*2002 or 2002tii= Tii

*Color= Riviera blue (oversprayed Pacific)

*Auto or manual= manual

*Factory options= many including special order interior color

*Any aftermarket accessories that came with the car (including but not limited to wheels, suspension, exhaust, seats, stereo, mirrors, pedals, steering wheel, etc.)= stock. Has replacement stanless exhaust and headers. Runs dual webbers but I have all components of KF.

*Did the vehicle come with tool kit= yes

*Your assessment of the vehicle history in terms of paperwork/receipts (1-10, 10 being highest)= 10. We have EVERYTHING, including any original part that was swapped. We even have brochures.

*Your assessment of the interior quality (1-10, 10 being highest)= 9

*Your assessment of the exterior quality (1-10, 10 being highest)= 8 (overspray)

*Your assessment of the mechanical condition of the vehicle (1-10, 10 being highest)= I would say 7 or 8 prev as it ran like a charm, but I blew the engine and am in the middle of a rebuild. Piston #1 failure, minimal else.

img0772vw.th.jpg

As an update, to bring everyone back to reality... My "free" car ended up costing me about 20,000$ last year. I paid others to do the majority of the work (parts about 10k). 100% New cooling system (failure killed the engine), full engine rebuild, full new upgraded suspension, modern rubber, new carpets (i did it), rebuild brakes, rebuild and reinstalled MFI/fuel pump (prob 40% of the total cost all factored in), countless other small things.

Exterior still an 8 or 9.

Interior 9.

Mechanical 9.8 (no old car will ever be 10)

A very fine rust free driver, but not concourse. Goes like stink. Passing modern bmw's on track days - priceless.

Back when this thread started, i looked at the first few posts, laughed, and figured it would be a while before "real" prices were admitted to. Anyone paying more than 5k for their car would be too ashamed to post here.

Makes me feel better about being honest about what I thought (at the time) was all the money for a nice Tii.

Paid too much for my 73tii but I have enjoyed the hell out of it.  Meeting fellow 02 owners as a result of buying it = priceless.

Paid $ 2,750 for the 69 + $ 900 to have it shipped from AZ to VA.  I'm certain Mike Pugh is still shaking his head.

Very interesting thread.  I'm glad that I stumbled upon it.

I'm curious, what characteristics should a non Tii, later model car possess to be warrant a $10K price tag? And no, I didn't pay that!  I'm very interested in your responses!

No rust would be a good place to start. And if it has been kept pretty original, that's also good. Then again, look back at the post about the modified 2002 that recently sold at a Mecum auction for over $20k, and you'll realize there are few hard and fast rules here.

I was an E30 guy for a long while, until I got bored and need a new project. I saw a  friend( now my boss) 72 02 park on his drive way and fell in love. I begged him to sell me the car, since it hasn't moved in a few years( 8 or 10 maybe more). But he would have non of it.

I searched CL and Ebay for along time until one popped up locally(Carlsbad) listed for $6500. I went back and fort with the owner tying to get s drive test for about 6 week. But timing was almost impossible cuz the owner was always out of town.I almost gave up, til one day I got an Email from him and finally got to check it out and went for a test drive. It sounded kinda loud to me, but I thought that was normal.

I was really surprised when the guy said I can have it for 4G. He said he just wanted to get rid of it.

Picked it up the next day. 8 grand more later and I still not done.
