Automatic 2002s

Quick question Guys...

Back in the day... Automatic 2002s were looked at with scathing derision by most 2002 guys.

Is that still true?

If so, what becomes of the automatic cars? does anyone care for them/repair them/keep them in good shape?

Are there any enthusiasts that enjoy them nowadays?

(For the record, I just bought a 4 speed car)

I do !!

bought it for the price of the towing, and restored it to the best of my knowledge. See project blog with tons of litle details specific to Automatic 02's.

I owned several cars in my life, of all kind. Many bimmers. This automatic 02 is a very unique and smooth car and i realy enjoy driving it, more than some other supposedely better cars i owned.

100% stock, except from a recent weber 32/36 upgrade.

I Managed to change a litle bit the spring presure in the transmission to alter the shift patern, but not much.

Very smooth and cool car. not slow at all. It deserve true respect.

a chance to drive one on some twisty back roads. By manually shifting between 2nd and 3rd I could easily keep up with the stick shift 02s on the drive--it really changed my opinion--it was as much fun to drive as a stick.

Don't knock 'em 'till you tried one.

cheers

My '75 automatic has been my daily driver for the past 29 yrs. and I love it. With an approx. 140 HP engine I do just fine with mine. Some people forget that the shifter can be moved just like a manual shifter. For example, I almost always move the shifter down to low range if I'm in traffic and miss a light. Just leave it there until I want it to upshift.

As an aside, at the 1995 O'Fest, in Colorado, I won my autocross class when the other cars in the class were all manual tiis. I had to move up a class because of my 14 x 6 wheels. And, at that time, I had a pretty close to stock engine.

Here's a picture with my wife's '76 Pastellblau automatic that she's been driving for 12 yrs. To give you an idea of how much she loves her car she turned down $12,000 cash when a guy offered to buy it from her.

you bet it was satisfying !!

I will always remember the feeling i had when i first heard the unique "howl" it makes.

Everything on this car is butter smooth and precise. Everything feels like it runs in oil bathed bearings (i am part responsible of this because of my obsession to perfection when i restored it !!).

I realy like the fact that this car is 100% mechanical, ie, no electronics, no fuzzy gizmo box, nothing. Just good ol' mechanics. It works better than some newer cars !! as an example, i just tried my friend Matrix...gosh the shifter feels like shit on this car !! lol...

I meet the guy who sold it to me (as a parts car) very often and he always stare at the car for a moment...and he always say "i cant believe it."...she is a beauty of engineering.

She drives super nice

She smell the good ol' farth

She is a head turner.

Everytime i take her i get thumbs up and smiles.

My wife has been driving an automatic 02 since 91. 1st one burned up. 2nd one went to my niece and is still on the road in Charlotte, NC as far as I know and the 3rd one she has been driving since 03 or 04. It went from stock to E30 M10 and now M42. It is my favorite car, I just can't get her to let me S14 it.

years ago, when i worked for dallas european, one of my customers restored a 71 automatic. one of the members of a mega rich family owned a 71 auto when was going to smu law school, back in the 70's. lotsa years later, he decided he wanted that car back. not just any 2002A, he wanted the one he used to own. so they traced the car to san francisco, went out and bought the car, and trailered it back to ft worth. stripped down to the bare metal, the bodywork alone cost 35k. the behr a/c cost 7k, and somehow he had been able to get several parts that were nla. every part was genuine, pistons, cam, etc. the shop owner had some very unique ties with bmwag, he had worked there for quite a while before immigrating to the us. also had some VERY strong ties with bmwna. the car was rebuilt completely stock. i remember when i went to see it, he had the "brand new" front struts sitting on newspaper out in the parking lot, they had just been spray painted black. total cost? 80 grand. the family owned at that time, 9 bmw's. 2 were e32 750's that had been stretched 2 ft.

only 80k $ ?

wow. mine did cost me like 2k, with the car.. if you go see the blog you will see i didnt wasted any energy, 99% of the motor inards is new,

new brake, new suspension, new paint, several nos parts and new ones,...

80k....wow. talk about a money pit. i guess someone did put a lot of money in his pocket !! for 40k you could probably buy all the parts from BMWNA and assemble one new from scratch...

I've owned two 2002As they were the first cars I owned, '72 #2532945, 1989-1990, which was a rust bucket & '73 2534016 1990-1995 that became a rust bucket. Lots of fun, logged thousands of miles. Still wish I had that '73, Boge sport shocks, Eibach sport springs, tii anti-sway bars, Weber 32/36. Despited being an auto it was fast and sure footed. I never should have let it go.
