Oil Change at Dealer?

Recommended Posts

BMW Dealer right down the road from my house. I usually go independent, but for such a quick and easy. Anyone else get their 2002's oil changed at the dealer? Hmm, wondering how much they would overcharge?

My co-worker just paid $150 last week for his '06 325ci. Oh and $175 for the brake fluid flush. Oh Oh, and $600 LABOR for the control arm bushings, yes just 2 of them and not the whole arms. I warned him about the Stealer but he went anyway. He did feel happy that they gave him a $50 "discount" on the labor to $550 LOL.

I'd much rather do it myself. Cheaper, and I'm more confident it's been done right (I stopped making mistakes years ago - haha). No idea what the dealer would charge for an '02 oil change, but my cost is $24 for 4 qts. of Brad Penn oil and $5 for a Mahle filter, incl. a drain plug crush washer.

Tomorrow I'm going to change my ATF. Not a big job with an automatic.

whats wrong with taking your car to the dealer? i worked at 3 different dealers in the last 10 years Lotus, Land Rover, SAAB. they have all the right tools and software. iv seen alot of basket cases that come from indipendent shops, not say indi-shops are all bad theres some really good ones out there. all the good techs at indi-shops get trained at dealerships without dealerships you dont have indipendent shops.

The only software you need for an '02 oil change is a rubber pad for the ground when you undo the oil drain plug.

Pay yourself the 75-125 bucks an hour you'd pay someone else. Hell, bring your '02 by my house and I'll change your oil and filter for half what the dealer charges, you can watch me and learn to do it yourself in the future, we'll be done in ten minutes and I'll treat you to a steak dinner with your own money.

Why make the cost of owning an '02 the same as a 2010 M3?

I do my '02 (and my wife's E39) in the parking space in front of my townhouse. Used oil gets carried to Jiffy Lube. Cheaper than the dealer/chain locations and it give me the opportunity to get underneath the car and look around

I slip a plastic grocery bag over the oil filter (once it's loose) and spin the filter off inside the bag. Helps reduce the amount of oil spillage.

That article sure isn't intended for my o2. I guess there are some out there that still have the canister style filter housing that takes a paper refill but mine has a spin on filter. Really, 10-15 minutes to do this job...way simple. Don't pay any attention to that article.
