BMW 2002 Restoration in LA/SoCal?

Sooooo...

I have a 1972 2002 original plan was to be a DIY restorer but after a year it has become clear I don't have the space or the time

1. Its my dad's car- original owner, and I'm restoring it for him so basically I can't sit on my behind and wait for time. I need to get it done soon so he can enjoy it. Body is fine, restoration really means every rubber every degradable thing that could have gone wrong after sitting for 20 years in a barn.

2. I am a bit wary of restorers who put the cars on back burners, cannibalize them for parts and then after years finally decide to cobble the car back together. Price of course is an issue, but know-how and familiarity with the 2002 are the most important thing

3. Car was in great condition before it went into storage but understandably lots of work needs to be done, I have ~$5000 in parts sitting here and understand there will be extras and additional things I will need.

Any suggestions? Anywhere in Southern CA is fine, I can tow the car to where it needs to go!

thanks!

There are quite a few people / shops in SoCal that can perform restoration work - it really depends on the current condition of your '02 and what you expect (daily driver or Garage queen?).

How much rust repair?

Is there much body work required?

Do you need new paint?

Condition of mechanicals - engine runs? car drivable? etc.

Condition of Interior?

There are also quite a few '02ers in SoCal who can provide opinions (good & bad) on what work you really need.

Can you share pictures of your car?

I'll repeat my previous de-recommendation: I wouldn't trust coupeking's shop to change the air in my tires.

Cheers,

Ray

www.coupeking.com- Peter's cars are done really really well, but they can be pricey. May wanna ask him if it's possible to fit what you want done under your budget.

Stop reading this! Don't you have anything better to do?? :P

Here are some pics guys, car was a daily driver from new in 1972 all the way to 1986 when it went into storage. The car was well maintained before it went into storage, but I haven't started it yet, almost there but not yet.

Body and paint is fine, no body rust (a little bit by the battery tray) its very dirty hasn't had a good wash yet. Basically I really need a skilled 02 mechanic, to replace everything that has aged since 1986.

other than mechanical a few things I need to figure out

1. window crank doesn't work and the window drops (I'm thinking regulator)

2. dash is cracked in multiple places, so I am looking possibly at a Blunt dash or have someone do the job locally (the hard part is removing the dash)

3. Cooling system was really nasty, lots of sludge and crystallized junk, even corroded one of the aluminum coolant passages (found a replacement for that one but I'll be on the look out for any other signs of corrosion)

I'll be shooting some emails out to you guys,

Contact Rob at 2002Haus.

Tell him what you are trying to acheive and he should be able to tailor something to your needs.

Jack at JFPro and Carl at LaJolla are both good resources as well.

Peter at coupeking has been in the business for a long time as well. I have not dealt with him personally, so I cannot say anything about the recommendation/de-recommendation.

From the surface it doesn't look like it needs too much.

It looks like your car is in pretty good shape (body & interior) - if you're initially concerned with mechanical issues, - there are quite a few shops in the LA/OC area capable of doing the work.

Here are some of the shops I've dealt with (all positive experiences)

Jack Fahuna @ JF Pro (Van Nuys)

Marc Norris @ Bavarian Workshop (West Valley)

Ron I. @ CMW (Huntington Beach)

Tim Aguinaga @ Euro Tech (Mission Viejo)

Email me if you want to discuss further.

For the best 02 mechanical restoration in So Cal, take it to Bill Holmes shop in San Diego county. For more info on Bill, just do a forum search. Sorry, Bill doesn't do paint or body work.

+1 on Ray's comment. The body shop is in the street along the curb and the paint booth is a couple 2x4's nailed together covered in dusty plastic.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
