BMW 2002 Restoration in LA/SoCal?

Any suggestions? Anywhere in Southern CA is fine, I can tow the car to where it needs to go!

There's a fellow named Tom Cleave who really knows his way around 2002's - factory trained in Germany, owned a shop in the Marina, avid racer and can now be found with several 02's on hand at Ronin Autowerks in Fullerton.

He'd be a fine choice to have the car inspected, parts installed and get everything in fine working order - then find yourself a body shop for paint. Email me for more contact info. -KB

That car is really nice! I love the interior. The dash isn't even that bad, mine looks like that. I haven't changed mine because I know it will just keep cracking.

Don't worry, it won't keep cracking if you keep it out of the sun/heat for long periods. If you garage it or use a good car cover, it should be fine. Assuming you get a used dash in good shape (not dryed out and about to crack) or have it restored. Sounds like you live in LA, so high heat is no problem but a few days a year, just keep it inside and cool on those 95+ deg days. And use a conditioning product on the vinyl to keep it supple. Remember: SUN = BAD for old cars.

+1 on Ray's comment. The body shop is in the street along the curb and the paint booth is a couple 2x4's nailed together covered in dusty plastic.

Sounds like a quality place...in Tiajuana.

I am the original owner and daily driver of a 1974 BMW 2002. Bill Holmes is top notch A+ #1. Hands down the best mechanic I have ever worked with. He knows and truly cares about the cars. Great guy too.

Reasonable and knowledgeable. You have to look past the rough edges of his character.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
