Year:: 1969

Make:: BMW

Model:: 1600

Price:: 13000.00

Location: : Cinco Ranch, TX

I saw this ad and thought I would pass it along.  A 1969 BMW 1600? in Blue over Black Interior.  I am guessing this is a 1600 based on the clock vs tach, the silver slats on the grill, the euro turn signals and the early mirror.  Only 2 pictures, so not much to go on, $13K OBO.

I recognized this one as being for sale in South Carolina recently. The car was originally $8,500 but the seller seemed ok at $6k. It has a bad paint job and if I recall from the original photos (this is one of the originals) the rear driver's side shock tower is due for a patch.

current seller says he bought two and is selling one.

I wish we had a VIN. Lack of headrests and sidemarkers suggest a pre-January 1, 1969 manufacturing date, which could mean it was a 1968 OR 1969 model --.assuming headrests and side markers were not removed. The smooth steering wheel center hub was common on 1968 models, but I believe the cut-off on that feature's application is vague, so it may be meaningless -- assuming it is original to this particular car. The flush front turn signals were on all U.S.-spec 1600-2s and 2002s through early in the 1970 model year (transition to the bulge-style turn signals might have been in time to meet a January 1, 1970 requirement date, or it might have been "gradual" through the last quarter of 1969). Nonetheless, an early car with lots of original components!

Steve

I too contacted the seller... VIN # is 1566086, I then asked the archives and this is what they sent me..

The BMW 1600 US VIN 1566086 was manufactured on August 30th, 1968 and delivered on September 05th, 1968 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motors Corp. in New York City. The original colour was Caribe, paint code 059.

I personally would not buy a shoddy paint job 1600 for 13,0000.00 ....

Tantalizing but overpriced, even given the (purported) low miles and rare color. The original asking price of 8.5K seems about right if everything was to check out.

Thanks, Lisa,

You are right: $13,000 is a very high price for that car. But, if you start looking around for Caribe cars -- they are rare and the color was discontinued early -- you will find that it's a gorgeous color. Done correctly, it's far nicer than the photograph. I doubt, based on the photograph, that the re-paint even used the correct color blend. There is a '66 1600-2 freshly re-painted in its original Caribe on Ander's excellent thread: The '66 Bible.

Look for VIN 1508053 sequentially in the first post. The car is in Norway.

Given an August 30, 1968 (Friday) manufacturing date, this must have been in the first batch of 1969 models -- the factory was closed for August holiday and re-opened right around this time. And the 1968 manufacturing confirms that the car was built without headrests or sidemarkers.

Steve

    BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

    Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

    History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

    In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
