  1. am not the kind of person who likes that much attention. My 71 was a GM brown and just blended in. I could do donuts and no one would find me. Not with this thing though. 23 years with this Turkis and it just stands out more as time goes on. I am at a stop light today and the guy to the right of me rolls down his window to ask me what year. Sorry, I'm not that excited any more to lean over and roll my passenger window down, though I do that a lot, so I give him 7 fingers and then 3 fingers. Is there an 02 owner public relations support group? I think I'll get a piece of card board in the car with a big 1973 on it to hold up.
  2. Thanks for sharing. We are all animals who have lost a bit of hair (the rakes). Glad it was an easy fix.
  3. The engine bay looks clean and original. If it's not rusted out jump on it!
  4. years ago John Gadberry did that same swap for Doc Honda of soutwest OH autocross fame.
  5. I tried that and was never happy. I spent a few more dollars and got the real VDO thing that is perfect. has a post for the light and one for the guage.
  6. The rear window of my 1973 has never been out, hence it has the original rear window gasket. I think I need to take it out to fix a rust spot and am afraid that the window will break being so old. Do you think I need to take the window and gasket out to correctly fix this rust spot? See picture below.
  7. I will be using this as a daily driver that will include lots of highway miles. I would like to hear your thoughts on these. Here are two examples of what I am looking at. Models stay the same, but specific examples can change. 5 speed mandatory. 1991 318is 140,000 mi well maintained and in nice original shape ~$2500. 1997 z3 1.9 80,000 mi original and nice. ~$9,000. I tend to own cars for a very long time and would look at these like my 1973 2002 where I would drive it and repair/rebuild/restore as I go along. I like the looks of both. z3 with top up has to be quieter than my 2002 (correct?) z3 is much newer so should have fewer immediate repair needs. Do golf clubs fit in a z3 trunk? Kfunk, I am an XL size so I fit in the z3 better than a miata. Regards,
  8. John was very active in the CCA in Cinci in the late 80's when I lived there. He was working on this car when I moved away. Ditto on all the accolades to John. You should see his 1:43 bmw model collection he built!

  10. My car goes in the shed from thanksgiving to St Patricks day.
  11. I hear ya on that. Someone might use this to analyze me. I have so many shelves and cabinets full of crap in the garage but I just can't get rid of the stuff. With the idea that some day you never know what you might need or play with again. -Every bolt, screw or washer that comes off of anything goes into the appropriate old PB jar- -All kinds of weird parts from old turn tables and other devices, you will never know when something might be used to fix something. -Tons of wire and old plug leads, but I stopped collecting these because... -rubber from inner tubes and old hoses. -string, twine, and rope collection. -Box of black walnut for the day I might sculpt again (sure) -every golf ball I ever found while looking for my ball. -Old cassette players, power packs, audio connector cables. -just plain old weird little stuff like glass, jaw bones, shells, sticks, rocks from hikes in the woods and beaches etc. -Old bike parts and wheels....like why? -sports stuff, sticks, bats, balls, cones, nets. -crappy old golf clubs no one would ever use. -any piece of wood, ever. Then there are the boxes of 02 parts that will never be of any use to anyone becaue they are so old or worn. And, I think I know where it all is. Fear having to move. sic
  12. Yeah, that airpump filter canaster sucks. I have never seen one of those before, but I am an extreme amateur. Without that stuff, on my 1973, I was able to take the starter out in about a 1/2 hour, while in the parking lot of the parts store, got it tested and put a new one back in the same time. Are you in a state where deleting that stuff would be illegal? Looks like you wil have to take that exahust gas recirculating tubes and filter canaster out to get to the starter. What do others think.
  13. I drove home from Chicago tonight in some serious rain/wind/trucks splashing on I-80 and I-65. I stopped for a short break after about an hour and a half of this and then the car wouldn't start. Cranked on it quite a few times, then checked for flooding (none), then looked inside the distributor cap and it had lots of condenstation inside it. Wiped it dry and then the car started right up. Just thought I'd share this tip as it has never happend to me before in 30 years of 02ing.
  14. I got and put them on last summer. I've been driving a lot of highway miles and have found them to have really made a difference.
  15. I just up to Chicago and back this week (660 miles total) and really enjoyed cruising at 80mph in Indiana with some foot to the floor on clear stretches. averated 25mpg too.

  17. Cool Bio of an original owner. “The BMW has been the most fun,” he said of the cars that have come and gone in his life. “The weight distribution is 50-50. It’s so simple — all it is, is an engine and a stick-shift transmission.” http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/05/automobiles/collectibles/05EGO.html?_r=1&ref=automobiles&oref=slogin FYI driving fun
  18. Hi Dave, I don't see the photo if you tried to post it. As a side note. After years of seeing your posts I just noticed your Butler PA tag. I worked in Butler for 2 years in 90-91 at Applied Sciences Associates. I thought it was interesting that the Butler motor works :-) also licenced the Austin 7 design to begin auto production, similar to BMW (Austion 7 = Dixi). The Butler company went on to design of the Willys Jeep. Could have been another BMW except they didn't have the Motor heriatage.
  19. I am totally jealous and must confess to my juvenile nature of having built and painted a classic standard RF model a few years ago. At work we reforcast (RF) our budgets during the year. Last month I sent our accountant a picture of a Rat Fink with a 3 edited on the overalls so it was RF3. Regards,
