  1. The '66 bible seems to indicate some uncertainty regarding that, some choice quotes: Ah, that valve cover ... believe it or not, these things do bug me, enough even to undo the 7 nuts and look for a casting date. And lo and behold - it has one! Be it on record that the striped valve cover is original to the car, with a casting date of March 1967 ... That's very interesting Cris! First of all, I thought all '67s had the smooth valve cover but clearly not. Secondly I thought BMW didn't start date stamping their valve covers until the early 70's. So I just learned two new things - thx...! Btw. I have confirmed from BMW Classic that the CKD cars started being assembled in Belgium in October '66.
  2. Looking at pictures, almost no glass? 98% complete? haha it looks like it does have much of the parts in there but you can't be 98% complete without any glass. (I see now that it looks like it has rear glass in the backseat). The taillight also indicates the "no rust" is slightly optimistic. I'm still excited to check it out.
  3. Dag nabbit! I am going to Kennewick tomorrow and have been searching for 02's on craigslist in that area all week. I didn't put in 1600 though, so this didn't pop up. I will give it a looksy. If anyone has any advice of what to look for specifically on the early 1600-02's I would appreciate it, i'll certainly be checking the typical rust areas.
  4. Steve and Yego, Thank you for the responses. I'm sorry to hear you will be passing on the opportunity Yego, obviously, dealing with shipping etc. makes it a much different proposition for you. Steve, I had not seen that post, though over the last few days I have tried to read up on the older 1600s as much as I could. Thank you for the link. As I mentioned, I will check it out again tomorrow. I do not think I will be the savior this car needs, but I could maybe stop the bleeding and ensure it doesn't get chopped up, and if I don't make any money or lose a thousand on it, that will be okay, hopefully I could hold on to it until the right person came along. All subject to what I find tomorrow, of course. The thought of a roundie and the old grille does give me some chills, but it is likely a job for someone with body skills. I'll report back again after probing a bit more regardless. And again, if anyone from out of town is considering it, I would be happy to help facilitate in any way. Best, Peter
  5. I am thinking about going back tomorrow and testing the rust a bit more with a hammer and pick and jack. Do you think the 1967ness of the car makes it much more valuable? Seems like its of an interesting vintage but maybe missing some of the parts that make it special. I don't need a project but if I could just buy it, stop any further rusting and fix a few of the big issues I would probably consider it a success. Yego, let me know if you are still considering it.
  6. Steve, I think part of of the reason the rust does not appear as bad as it could be is the relative freshness of the paint. The spray looked pretty solid and undoubtedly helped protect the car. I really wish I had a garage where I could take this on. If anyone in the area wants to split a project with me, let me know! EDIT: I do not know if it was 6-volt, would need to check
  7. I am thinking I will be running some steelies on my car when I get it back on the road this Spring and have been digging the steelie look lately. I definitely want to get out of the 13" size because finding tires has been more effort than I like to exert. Right now I believe my best two options are a set of G60 steelies in 15x6" et35 Or e30 steelies in 14x5.5 et35: Obviously, the VW wheels are an inch taller and half an inch wider which will affect handling, but also offer more tire options. Styling wise they are pretty similar (though I like the round vw holes better than the d holes. My main question is does anyone have the respective weights on these wheels? I couldn't find them with a search, though I seem to remember reading that the VW wheels are pretty light. I won't be tracking the car so it isn't of vital importance, but why run heavier than necessary? I could get a set of e30 steelies that need blasting and painting for $50, or I can get a refurbished vw set for around $270. Your input is appreciated, Peter
  8. My take below. I probably will not be making an offer on the car because I don't have the space or tools for some of the work. The nose is not as bad as I thought it would be, in fact, the upper portion of the nose looks great, the bottom is fairly troubled though. It PROBABLY still needs a full nose job, but perhaps not. The entirety of the interior and trunk is wet still. Not a good sign. It seems that pretty much all the seals are gone. The dash is cracked but salvageable. The seats are probably salvageable, though perhaps the horsehair would need replacing, the covers looked good but probably need a thorough cleaning. The carpet looked pretty new, but was all wet. Because it was recently installed I couldn't get it too far up to really check out the floor pans, but could to some extent. There is definitely some rust under there but the tar paper was all still in place so it was impossible to know how much. I did not find any spots where the rust went all the way through, but I would be prepared to strip the interior and possibly weld in some portions of new floor. The entire should be completely gutted and checked at each point. Under the hood looked pretty decent (dirty, but nothing looked too bad). The strut mount area looked rust-free, just a tiny bit of rust near the heater box, which I see on almost every 02 I look at. A bit more rust where the hood has rubbed some of the paint off on the passenger side, but it wouldn't worry me too much. Looked all stock to me, but with a stock air cleaner on the carb (which I did not pull) I couldn't tell if it was a stock carb. The passenger door only opens about a foot, perhaps it just needs to be realigned, perhaps it is from whatever hit the car took. Hard to get too good of a look under the car where it was sitting. Definitely some rust along the rails but from what I could see I don't think it would necessitate replacing. In the trunk, the shock towers have clearly had some patch work done in the past (prior to repainting) but they looked solid as they are. My biggest concern is there was a few inches of standing water in the spare tire well. I did not pull the spare tire because its clamp was kind of rusty as well but there is certainly rust down there. From under the car, I can say it has not eaten its way all the way through, so again, unclear if it would need new metal welded in or if it could just be ground down and cleaned up. A small amount of bubbling behind the driver rear tire, pretty typical spot to see it, no knowing how bad it is under there but nothing that screamed out. Rear bumper had a bit of damage as well. If I had a garage and could weld I would perhaps consider the car, I do think it is a car that should be saved and not parted out, but I certainly am not in the position to be its savior, perhaps you are. 9. I will be going to check out the car as soon as I receive a work call I am waiting for (hopefully by the lunch hour). Will report back
  10. I've emailed the guy to try and see it myself (no response yet), but i'm not sure how serious I am. if I check it out and don't make an offer or deal I can let you know. I'm most worried about how bad the nose is (does it need replacing?) and the typical rust stuff.
  11. This one has been posted for probably a month now. The starting asking price was either $3100 or $3500, I don't recall for sure. He says pretty firm at $2800 but with how long its been listed he can't be too firm.
  12. If there are AC components behind the console you could make most your money back on them.
  13. Very nice car, but dammmmn. Are those e30 steelies? or VW?
  14. Great prices, if Gruff doesn't end up taking the springs for some reason, I will
  15. IE now sells headlight adjustment pieces. Not cheap but i'm not sure if anyone else could do much better price wise. I ordered a few sets but haven't installed yet. https://www.iemotorsport.com/bmw/2002-body-chassis/02HLbuckit.html
  16. Got the Pelican Parts promo email today and it contained an add for Einszett's Gummi Pflege, which I often see noted and highly touted on the FAQ as a miracle worker for old seals. The email noted that Einszett is closing up shop and that Pelican Parts bought lots of their Gummi Pflege to sell off as this happened. I've never used the product but it alarmed me, if everyone loves it so much, I better buy some, STAT. Luckily, my search brought me to the Einszett's USA homepage and a press release that noted their closure, but also noted that many of the current employees will be starting a new company, Nextzett, which will continue to provide Einszett's line of products. Crisis averted. Though there may be some time where it is a bit harder to find, it shouldn't be going off the market. That said, Pelican Parts is asking $9 a bottle which seems to be a reasonable price for it. There are also other companies that make a gummi pflege but this one appears to be one of, if not the, most common. Happy gum care!
  17. You should probably post your location
  18. If anyone buys this and chops it up, I would be interested in the rear clip (to turn into a trailer), but I don't have the space to buy the whole car right now unfortunately. GLWS
  19. Wow, apparently the BMW price for these has gone up quite a bit over the last two years (what hasn't!). I paid about $240 new from max a few years ago after struggling with many other fan blades and working motors, trying to balance and mate them. Now I see it's listed at almost $100 more. It was more than worth it to spend the money to get one that popped in with no need to try to balance or bend fan blades to make it work. Good luck with sale.
  20. Just beat me to it. Some German speaker on the FAQ should probably add some subtitles for the rest of us.
  21. d'oh! Well, since the thread was brought back to life it could have excited some other readers as well.
  22. I think it would be fair to have an informal limit on how many postings a single seller can try to keep on the main page (3?). Obviously, with other people responding to older posts etc. it would be impossible to ensure only x number were up there, but by having a "rule" that mods could occasionally remind people of (when they make tons of posts in that section) it may help the problem, particularly since its often the same sellers.
  23. $17,600 Right where it is now. Two-tone cars need to go away.
