  1. ...and associated trim. Damn deer. Sahara's best, but not too picky. Fire sale prices are best too... Steve 209-795-7445 steve AT the portable dad DOT com
  2. The '76 I was recently given has a Behr AC system. Haven't investigated its condition. Don't remember seeing a lot of positive comments about either of the factory systems in '02s, but also haven't asked the question directly. So: 1) If it's working, is the Behr AC worth a damn? 2) What's the performance/HP cost? 3) Has anybody ever swapped AC from one car to another, and how did it go? Thanks one and all.
  3. I'd say take it out and see what you can find. If it's a fused line or a broken ground, you'll find it and fix it. If you can't find and fix it, then take it in - no harm no foul. It's not working now, so you can't break it, and slowing down, really looking at stuff is a great way to learn how it all works. (That and asking the way smart other guys on this board...)
  4. ...given a car. So I was driving back to Calaveras County from Stockton yesterday afternoon, and somebody in a white minivan pulled off the road honked as I went by, then (apparently) chased me down the highway for 10 miles until the stop sign in Farmington. There was a truck between me and them, so I didn't know anything about it until the van pulled up beside me. The woman driving said she wanted to talk to me about my car, a Sahara '74 in pretty nice shape. She was bringing her husband home from the hospital and saw me pass. Her husband, George, 84, had been driving a Sahara '76 since 1991 until he turned into an SUV about six weeks ago and caved in the driver's side front. Didn't do the car any good, and didn't do George any good - he loved his 2002 and was on his second engine at the time of the accident. (And the damn diving-board bumper didn't help a lick - the SUV was taller and the grill took the impact. Anyway, Daisy and George asked me if I wanted the car, and I traded a signed copy of my book and a nice bottle of chianti for it this afternoon. Very nice people. It's certainly the first time I've been chased down a highway and given a BMW!
  5. Thanks kindly! It was one my kids sure needed when they left for college, so I hope it's useful for others, too.
  6. Very nice! First thing I'd do is add a third brake light. (If it doesn't have one - no pix from that end...) People are so used to seeing them that a car without one is at risk. Pick carefully and you'll be able to find one that looks pretty stock, too. I got one from a Toyota Tercel (I think it was a Tercel...) and it looks like it was always there.
  7. What the others said - a jack and a bit of creativity makes it work. I used urethane mounts from Ireland when I did mine. Added a very slight bit of vibration, but not unpleasant. Later I tried a urethane transmission mount as well but I didn't like the feel of that at all and went back to stock.
  8. While you've got your camera out, can we see more of the red-hooded car, please???
  9. Problem with that is they might send you some!
  10. Like the wheels, too - what are and how much do they weigh?
  11. I agree with the Board - about $500 as is, maybe $2,000 running and driving. I've been watching '02 sales here in Central California and don't see that car going for any more than that given its condition. And year is a huge factor here. A '74 or '75 you can sell locally. A '76 and you'll either need to get it smogged yourself (to prove to a buyer that it does smog) or sell it out of state. Where it is located now?
  12. I never knew antifreeze was a factory-fitted accessory! Cool!
  13. I dig the minilites on the left and BBS's on the right! Seriously, beautifully done.
  14. Yep, a bit of a twist to the nozzle and go half-speed. I hold the boot up as well. It's a lot like filling a motorcycle tank.
  15. A good wash, followed by a polishing compound - I used Meguiar's Ultimate Coumpound on my Sahara '74 with very good results. (My paint wasn't that oxidized.) Follow that with good wax. I don't have a buffer I trust so did it by hand. Took me just about a whole weekend, and I was very happy with the results.
  16. I like the style of the epsilons a lot better - any consideration of painting or powedering them silver?
  17. Toby - Nice mention in the Roundel, BTW...
  18. Got sent this link earlier today - don't know how true the story is, but the driving is impressive. As for 2002 content, a white 02 in the headlights as the car makes a hard right somewhere about the 8:00 mark? (Didn't stop the film to look closer...) On an August morning in 1978, French filmmaker Claude Lelouch mounted a gyro-stabilized camera to the bumper of a Ferrari 275 GTB and had a friend, a professional Formula 1 racer, drive at breakneck speed through the heart of Paris early in the morning. The film was limited for technical reasons to 10 minutes; the course was from Porte Dauphine20, through the Louvre, to the Basilica of Sacre Coeur. No streets were closed - Lelouch was unable to obtain a permit. The driver completed the course in about 9 minutes, reaching nearly 140 MPH in some stretches.. The footage reveals him running real red lights, nearly hitting real pedestrians, and driving the wrong way up real one-way streets. Upon showing the film in public for the first time, Lelouch was arrested. He never revealed the identity of the driver, and the film went underground. It is a classic. TURN UP YOUR SOUND...!!!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqHrCLt3Geo
  19. California is also a front-plate state, but I recently switched to a Euro plate anyway, same number as the back plate. Logically, it's defensible - the number on this plate is easier to read than the "legal" one, and any cop could run the number and get the reg info on my car. Legally, however, I know it's an excuse for any officer to stop me at any time if they want to. Hasn't happened yet. I keep the legal plate in the trunk, under my toolbox, and will offer to zip-tie it on on the spot if I ever get stopped.
  20. Cabe, that's a damn nice job. I'll be using it for inspiration for my 74 (unless dubois says something rude to me too!)
