Prep..prep..prep. Anyone can squeeze the trigger on a gun and get decent results, especially if the car then gets color snded and buffed. The money is in the preperation. All surfaces must be clean, smooth and for best results, take as much trim and glass off the cars as possible. Some shops do a nice spray job but don't take the time to remove parts and the final outcome looks like crap.
As for paint; today most 2 stage paints are easy to use (if you follow the correct mixing ratios) and produce nice results. Shops like 2 stage because it flashes quickly (dries) and color sands and buffs great. Single stage is still the paint of choice (IMHO) for Weekend drivers and show work. I had my tii painted 27 years ago with Ditzler Acrylic Enamel (now sold as PPG), and today the car is winning shows. The jobs seemed costly at the time ($2500) but has really held up. The paint is fantastic, color hasn't faded and has a deep shine. The car is driven every weekend but does get pampered and garaged.
I wouldn't worry about the paint as much as asking about the prep. Spend a few evenings taking the bumpers, trim, windshield and read glass out yourself. That will save you a bundle and you can take the time to replace everything slowly , replacing rubber as needed and end up with a great job. Good luck, I'm sure your car will look great!!
