  1. my E21, then converting to a Sanden rotary, I'd suggest NOT using the Behr compressor. When I recommissioned the a/c on the 320 a few years ago, I went through 3 Behr reman units before we got one that would hold vacuum, and routing the hoses out of the way of the exhaust manifold was a real PITA. 3 years later, the reman Behr unit failed, so I bit the bullet and converted to a Sanden - weighs a bit less, hoses fit better, runs smoother, draws less power, and the a/c blows colder. A/c shop suggested staying with R12, which has proved to be a good decision.
  2. yesterday, eastbound on Fair Oaks Blvd at about 4:30 pm - trailer was behind a small motorhome, '02 was a bit rusty (spare tire well was a LOT rusty - spare was hanging out the bottom), last registered 2002, rear valance (below the back bumper) appeared to have once been Turkis or green, E21 turbine alloys. Anyone on the board just pull a car out of a barn or back yard somewhere on the east side of Sacramento?
  3. area going down Saturday morning? In past years we've had anywhere from two to seven or eight cars do a group drive - usually leave from the Safeway parking lot at Alhambra & J streets in Sacto @ at 7:30 - 8 am and get to Brisbane a bit before 10. Although we've generally gone via Walnut Creek and Hwy 24 to the Bay Bridge, the last couple of years there's been a traffic jam at the Caldecott tunnel so I-80 may be a better choice this year.
  4. group of about a half dozen cars that come together. Since there's no preregistration this year, if you're trying figure how many shirts to order in which sizes (seems like most years, certain sizes always sell out early), I'm in for a pair in 2xl...........
  5. yourself (and everyone else on the road with you) a big favor and go thorugh the whole braking system - rebuild (or replace) the calipers, and replace the rear wheel cylinders, master cylinder, brake shoes and front pads, and all the hoses. While you're at it, repack the front wheel bearings and check the front suspension and steering linkage for worn parts and mushy rubber bushings.
  6. for it, but if a front strut brace helps, a rear shock tower brace might help as well. I saw noticible improvements in chassis stiffness on my E21, first with a front strut brace, then a further improvement with a rear one.
  7. (one you may have already thought of) - before visting your local DMV to register and transfer title, make copies of the CA title and registration cards and conveniently "lose" the black CA plates (and have a reasonably believable story as to how they were lost - even something as simple as "I left the car parked in my driveway the first night and somebody stole 'em). The plates, title and registration are part of the car's "provenance", and prove that it spent the first 40+ years of its life in CA.
  8. with a 38/38 & cam installed - if you can find a C.A.R.B. EO tag for a smog legal 32/36 and install it on the 38, and if you can find a smog tech that's not paying close attention to what's installed on your car, and not looking over his shoulder for a state inspector to come in an catch him passing your car on an obviously non-compliant set up you MIGHT get lucky and get past the visual inspection if all the other emissions stuff is still in place. If you were lucky enough to get past the visual, you'd still have to pass the dyno / sniffer test - that's not very likely with a sychncronus opening 38/38 dumping more fuel in at small throttle openings, and with the longer overlap Schrick cam changing the valve timing. In short, you're probably more likely to hit the lottery twice in a row than pass CA emissions with this set up........
  9. brush at least one in factory Turbo livery. Where did you find 'em for sale? I've been checking Toys R Us, KB and the HotWheels rack at a couple of grocery stores every time I do the marketing, and have yet to find even one......
  10. situation, but this info unfortunately may indicate rusting from the inside out on the wheel arches, and the paint flaking on the trunk lid suggests poor general paint prep. Hate to have to say it, but if you've got big flakes of paint peeling off in the middle of flat horizontal panels, there's a pretty good likelyhood that you're going to have ongoing paint adhesion issues all over the car........
  11. car is pretty typical of a well done "custom" (doesn't really matter whether it's an '02, a '60's Camaro or a '56 Ford F-100), in that the seller is undoubtly asking significantly less for the car than the amount invested in it. From personal experience, it's unlikely that anyone without extensive mechanical, metalworking and painting skills (and the time and work space to complete a major project) would be able to duplicate it for much less than twice the $$. Whether it's worth the asking price is in the eye of the beholder - for someone who wants a modified car, can afford the asking price, and doesn't have the time, skills or work space to build it, it's probably a bargain.
  12. some active, some less so. You might consider dropping in at the monthly "EuroSunday" get-togethers (8 am, 4th Friday of each month, various locations - CA Auto Museum this coming Sunday) - I'm almost always there, and there are usually a couple of of other '02 folks as well.... I'm also a BMW/Chevy guy - have had everything from Camaros to Suburbans over the years, currently have a '66 Nova wagon in addition to the '02 and two other bimmers.
  13. "Oscar" guy, and thousands of square miles of "golden bown" hillsides of dry grass, California would pretty much have to be Ceylon.................
  14. code includes provisions requiring that virtually all vehicles have both front and rear bumpers - not often enforced, but if a representative of the law enforcement community decides to make life difficult, you can get an equipment citation that would require you to install bumpers if you're running without. Not a big deal if the bracket holes are still there, but no fun if you've done significant body work to close up the mounting and bracket holes.......
  15. duct-taped to a chair and made to scroll through that thread repeatedly until they begin to understand the sheer amount of hand work and time that goes into saving a car with "minor" rust damage (and yeah, "rustoration" was a deliberate misspelling.....)
  16. entry at O'fest in Colorado in 2002 took first place over my late 60s style 87th (HO) scale dealership diorama - the 2nd place 2002 sculpture trophy from that event always brings back good memories of that week.
  17. around the instrument cluster - one of the most common is a bad ground on the back of the cluster circuit board that causes erratic readings in both the gas and temp gauges. Run a couple of searchs and you should come up with lots of info on testing and running new grounds............
  18. click on the link and scroll down - pretty creative.......... http://www.rtrexotics.net/RTR-2012-MICRO-RIDES.html
  19. with a Sanden on the factory system in the E21, couldn't be happier - much less power required with the ac on, compressor weighs less and causes MUCH less vibration than a Behr rotary, system produces 36-37 degree vent temps on R12. Don't know if he's going to produce another run of them or not, but HobieDave did a run of VERY nice Sanden brackets a while back - there's a post trying to track one down a few posts up. And by the way, at least in my area (Sacramento CA) most a/c shops seem to have no problem getting R-12 - both the systems in the E21 and my wife's E24 were designed for (and work much better with) R-12, so I've stayed with it. Last couple of times I had them serviced, there was no issue with finding the refrigerant, and cost wasn't out of line (about 50% more per pound than R-134).
  20. that DED signed when he was the speaker at the O'fest banquet in 2002 and a copy of "Thus Spake David E" that he signed at Concorso Italiano a few years ago. Thought about selling 'em, but decided to keep them with the car, along with an original copy of the C&D issue that had the article in it - it's too bad that issue doesn't have an 02 on the cover (cover art for that issue is a photo of a one-off Kas Kastner rebodied Triumph TR 250 in the middle of a dry lake, if my memory is correct.....).
  21. local supermarket, ???????? I keep hoping Hot Wheels, Johnny Lightning or one of the other companies that makes small scale die casts will do a Nova wagon, too.........
  22. E21 sailed through easily back in October shortly after getting a new cat (the old one broke up and plugged the outlet), was really concerned that my wife's 633 CSi would fail this time (barely squeeked through last time), and at least need a new cat. Adjusted the valves, changed the oil & filters & put in new plugs yesterday morning, took it on a good freeway run to get the cat hot, & it passed with better numbers than 2 years ago. E21's past 220k, and the 633 is coming up on 190 - must be on the good side of the bimmer gods this year........
  23. used in the late 82/83 M10 e21's with the exception of the rear housing/speedo drive (e30 has an electronic speedo driven off the diff, e21 has a cable speedo driven off the trans). Theoretically at least, it should be possible to mix & match e21 & e30 parts to get what you want, but it would certainly be easier to start out with an e21 unit. Should be at least some e21 Getrag 240's around since they came in the very last of the the e21's and aren't as popular as the 245's for '02 swaps - I know they still turn up in cars at P&P here in northern CA fairly regularly.........
  24. Post is a month old, but he's probably still got at least some of them...... "I am selling multiple bmw 2002 vehicles. I have nine that I am selling, I had been saving them for "rainy day" projects and haven't gotten to them yet. Some vandals broke out the windows out of most of them so now I just want to find them new homes. I want $1000.00 each. Years range from 69-75 I have both automatics and manuals. I have titles and paperwork. Call Wally 530-370-8444. " http://chico.craigslist.org/cto/2737316551.html
