  1. PMs sent to everybody who inquired........
  2. For some reason, I'm not receiving PM's related to this post - I've received multiple PM e-mail notifications, but without messages in my folder here, I can't respond. Kinda weird, because I'm getting PM's related to the 5 speed for sale post.

  4. Quick note regarding several For Sale posts that were placed some time ago - I undoubtedly owe several people apologies for failing to follow up on inquiries regarding the items posted. Unfortunately, we had a series of family emergencies around that time that occupied all of my time and attention, and I wasn't taking the time to monitor the site for messages. Those issues have now been resolved, and I'll be back to posting ads and monitoring the site for messages. Again, my apologies to anyone it appeared I was ignoring.

  7. That may be, but I need to clear out the '02 and E21 leftovers, and I'd rather see it go to a member of the community who can use it now rather than wait forever to try to get top dollar, especially if I don't have to crate it and ship it.

  15. Personal opinion, from a stepdad who's been through a pair of teenagers (one male, one female) 15 or so years ago - no way I'd put a teen driver in another '02. Friend of my wife's gave us a non-smog legal '76 in the early 90's, did a somewhat questionable transfer that wasn't subject to a smog check, and told me it was on us if we wanted to deal with smogging it the next time it came due. Step daughter was just past 16, drove the car to school and to the barn where she kept her horse until the afternoon when she overcooked it in the rain on a downhill curve near our house and ran up a bank and into a tree to avoid hitting a pickup head on. Car was totaled, she walked away. Step son (one year younger) had a 68 Rambler 2 door post sedan (232 six, a/t) all the way through high school - drove like a lunatic, still don't know how he survived without crashing and taking several other people with him. If I had to do it over again, I'd insist on putting 'em both in slow, solid, mid-sized, manual transmission, 2 door sedans (hard to text when both hands are busy, and with only two doors their buddies can't pile in and out of the back seat as easily) - either Volvo 240's or something not too expensive with airbags and abs. If they gripe about driving a dull "gramma car", tell them you'll discuss something they like better in a year or so when they've shown they can take car of the car and keep it in one piece.
  16. Stepson is looking at a Miata for one of his kids, would like to get a history on it for him.....
  17. Car has been sold - new owner lives west of San Jose, so it's staying in Northern CA and gets to keep the black plates it's worn since day one.

  21. Fitted a set of E30 sport seats to a '71 Roundie several years ago - unfortunately, they're wider than either stock seats or E21 Recaros. I think you'll find that the seat centerline winds up even farther outboard of the steering column centerline than the stock seats which are a bit offset to start with. Only way I was able to get the seat height correct and still retain fore-and-aft and height adjustability in the seat tracks was to reshape the center tunnel to move the inner seat track inboard. Ultimately turned into a major project involving cutting and welding the tunnel and modifying the driveshaft center support mount.
  22. If you have a compressor and an adjustable impact gun, the strut nut can be snugged down by setting the gun to its lowest torque setting and carefully "bumping" the gun's trigger to gradually tighten the nut - be careful not to over-tighten. Have also found that an impact gun is by far the easiest way to remove the nut on an old set of strut inserts.
  23. Year:: 1969 Make:: BMW Model:: 2002 Price:: 17500 Location: : Sacramento CA 1969 2002 Sunroof – chassis # 1664730, Chamonix over blue/black Unique opportunity to acquire an early production Series I 2002 sunroof - cosmetically original, unmolested survivor; excellent original paint & interior (no tears, splits or cracks in upholstery or dash). Two owner black-plate inland northern California car from new (Napa and Sacramento), factory tourist delivery in February 1969, original service books with European service stamps, original oval tourist delivery plates and original two volume blue-binder service manual set. Purchased from original owner’s family in 2000 @ 132K miles, extensive mechanical refurbishment and upgrades, all original components retained and included to permit return to 100% factory specification when desired, NO body alterations or non-reversible modifications. Upgrades include early 70’s dealer-option Ronal 5.5 X 13 alloy wheels, E21 5 speed overdrive transmission, E21 (vented rotor/larger caliper/390 mm rear drums) brakes, engine rebuild at 185K on original numbers-matching block (balance & blueprint, cc’ed & port matched E21 head, Schrick 184 cam, 9.1 pistons, 8 bolt crank and flywheel, 38/38 Weber carb, modified factory 2 bbl intake, tii exhaust and distributor), all original cosmetic, engine, driveline, and suspension components including head, carb / intake & exhaust / emissions equipment, 4 speed transmission, brakes, wheels, etc are included. This was one of several 2002’s featured in BMW NA’s “Inside every 2002 BMW is a BMW 2002” ad campaign in early 2002 – copies of ads that include photos of this car are included, as are multiple memorabilia items given to participants by BMW’s ad agency. Also included are multiple items from O’fest 2002 including the cloisonné grill badge that was given exclusively to participating 2002’s. We’ve toured extensively in this car (Oregon, Arizona, Southern CA, Colorado) with zero mechanical issues – wouldn’t hesitate to drive it across the country tomorrow. Much as we hate to let it go, retirement and a pending downsize means finding it a new home. This is a wonderful 2002 in excellent condition with terrific patina and provenance that has been driven and loved for 45 years and 209,000 miles by two caring, adult owners, with the result that it's earned its share of rock chips and small blemishes along the way. We’re hoping it finds an excellent home with a long-term third owner who’ll maintain it as the preservation-class survivor it is. More photos at: https://www.flickr.com/photos/129242948@N03/sets/72157649518604053/ (unfortunately, I do not have access to a lift, so current photos of the underside are not included – I’ll be happy to do my best to get detail photos if needed) Asking $17,500 – offering first to the 2002 FAQ / BMW CCA community, will expand to other venues if not sold in the next 30-60 days. Will have the car at the Bay Area 02 Swap & Show in Brisbane CA on May 2nd if not sold previously. Contact Barry Allen @ 916-695-0206 or e-mail bja_47 for more information
  24. Haven't been on the board for a while, not sure if this is new info or if it's already been covered, but in case it hasn't..... As a result of a poor idle / stalling issue, decided it was time to rebuild the Weber 38 DGES carb on the '69. Called Pierce Manifolds to order a rebuild kit and asked one of their techs if there was anything out of the ordinary I needed to watch for - he asked if the car is driven much, and said if not, to look for fine sediment and / or cloudy fuel in the float bowl. Apparently, because ethanol is both hygroscopic (absorbs water) and highly volatile (both of which make sense - it's alcohol), the ethanol component evaporates much more quickly than the gasoline - the remaining fuel becomes highly corrosive and can attack carburetor body castings, The guy said in cars that aren't driven regularly, he's seen float bowls that were so corroded the inner surface felt like 180 grit sandpaper - the corrosive nature of the partially evaporated fuel is hard on paper element fuel filters as well. He also said ethanol can erode tiny particles from other fuel system components from the gas tank on forward, and that most normal fuel filters won't filter out small enough particles to keep the crud out of the carb (which turned out to be my problem). To avoid both issues, he said they make three standard recommendations to people who are forced to use fuel containing ethanol, and whose cars don't get driven every day: Replace the fuel filter with a #9101 fuel injection filter - originally designed for early efi 240 Z's, it's the only fuel injection spec filter they know of with old-style nipples that will accept standard slide-on fuel hose and clamps. If possible, replace the mechanical fuel pump with an ethanol compatible electric pump, and splice a cut-off switch into the power lead. When parking the car for several days, use the switch to cut the fuel supply to the carb and let the engine run until the carb runs dry so there's no fuel left in the float bowl. Add at least a half bottle of "Carb Defender" to every 8-10 gallons of gas to neutralize the acids in the ethanol. I'd think that in humid climates it might also be advisable to drain the gas tank as well if a car's going into long-term storage and the local fuel has ethanol in it. Hope this is some benefit...................
  25. Rare survivor 2 owner Northern CA black plate 2002 sunroof – wonderful patina, full ownership history from new. Original Chamonix (white/ivory) paint, navy blue/black interior, no cracks/splits/tears in dash, upholstery, carpets, or headliner; near perfect trunk, spare, tire well and original tools. Very late 1968 production (chassis # 1664730, end of series I at approximately chassis # 1664760 in December 1968); factory tourist delivery in February 1968; original tourist delivery plates, factory delivery stamps and break-in service stamps from several European locations in service book, original owner’s manual and factory “Blue Binder” service manual included. Appeared in BMW national advertising campaign “Inside every 2002 BMW is a BMW 2002” early in ’02, driven from Sacramento to O’fest in Colorado and return in August of ’02, featured in the BMW segment of the California Auto Museum “Wundercars” exhibit in late 2012. Multiple reversible performance, safety, and comfort upgrades 2002-2005 including E21 5 speed overdrive transmission, ’77 vented rotor front and 390 mm rear drum brakes & master cylinder; Eibach springs and Bilstein Sport shocks/struts, 3 point retractor seat belts; engine rebuild on numbers matching block (9.1 pistons, full balance, Schrick 284 cam, E21 head, 38/38 Weber on custom manifold, Jet Hot coated tii exhaust manifold and new tii distributor); early 70’s Ronal dealer-option alloys with very rare alloy lug nuts, Hella H4 headlights & period correct Cibie fog lights; 3 row radiator core and E21 pusher fan; period Nardi wood steering wheel, VDO clock, volt meter and oil pressure gauges, 4 speaker audio system (no panels cut or holes drilled). 100% of all parts removed (3 large plastic storage containers including all mechanical parts – even the smog bits - plus original 4 speed transmission & original steel wheels) included – if desired, could be returned to completely as-delivered cosmetic appearance in a weekend. As should be expected of a 46 year, 200+ mile survivor, there are multiple small retouched rock chips in the nose and rockers, one small area of damage repaired by the original owner below the right front turn signal, several small dings, and one very small are of rust in the lower front valance that was neutralized in 2001 and has not recurred (a patch panel cut from an OE nose in included for future repair if desired. This is a car that deserves to be kept as original as possible – perhaps with some of its small flaws improved upon, but definitely NOT “restored”. Ready to drive anywhere; extensive photo documentation available on request. $26,500 – contact Barry Allen via PM, e-mail at barry.allen@comcast.net, or by phone @ 916-965-0206.
