It’s nice to see this thread woken up every once in a while.

Since it’s been quite a few years since I posted my parent’s Tii. I figure it’s time I do so again. My parents bought the car new off the showroom floor in February ‘72 from Weatherford BMW in Berkeley. They got the 2002 TII license plate in ‘78. The Chromodora CD40 “Dino” wheels also date from ‘78. I came along in late ‘74. Some updated pictures...

Dear Mr Jones,

Thank you for your email. Here's the data:

The BMW 2002 tii US VIN 2760007 was manufactured on October 20th, 1971 and delivered on November 8th, 1971 to Hoffman Motors. The original colour was Colorado, paint code 002.

We hope this information is helpful for you.

Yours sincerely,

Andreas Harz

I never get tired of seeing very early examples, Tom, whether they be 1966 1600-2’s, or the first U.S.-spec tii’s!

While we have your attention, how about indulging us to see if a real-life car, in this case a U.S. tii before VIN 2760049, reflects what is published in a 1971 service bulletin? The upper mounts of the front seat shoulder harnesses on your parents’ tii should be just below the rear vent windows, and NOT on the B pillars. Here’s the bulletin.

Thanks and best regards,

Steve

Well, 2760007 definitely had the “spaghetti” Klippan seatbelts with the big loop ring on the trans tunnel. The shoulder belt was mounted on the top section of the quarter panel below the quarter window.

I also happen to have worked on 2760048, Atlantic blue, and it had original carpets with evidence of the Klippan belts in the carpet on the trans tunnel and the quarter panels.

With the Klippan belts being such a struggle to keep straight and use, many people upgraded to inertia reel belts, my father included. We used to get the Quelle catalog from Germany, like a German Sears catalog back when it was good. Dad bought Romer Britax front inertia seat belts, swapped the quarter “door” panels from the ‘67 1600 he had at the time. And, also installed Romer Britax rear shoulder belts around the same time, in the early eighties... even a fifth seat belt, lap only though, for the rear center seating position.

Cheers, and hope this helps

Thanks, Tom,

That’s very helpful. So the November 1971 Service Information bulletin is, thus far, consistent with real live examples!

And kudos to your father, who upgraded the car into a “five-placer” with shoulder harnesses at the four corners, back in the eighties, no less!

Best regards,

Steve

Thank you!

Wait...what? ? And I do mean, what as in Holy sh*t? ?

VIN 2760173, a U.S. 1972 model, and the 173rd U.S.-spec tii manufactured, was delivered to Alpina? Does the car still exist? Do you own it? Do you know what modifications were made to the car by Alpina? In short, can you tell us more? Can you show us more?

U.S.-spec cars that received bona fide Alpina parts during the ‘02 era are relatively rare. Most of these parts, however, were installed in the U.S. But U.S.-spec cars that actually passed through Buchloe, for the Alpina “spa treatment,” are extremely rare. We’re going to need more details. ?

VIN 2761923, a U.S. 1972 model, was a 121-head, plastic-intake-runner, no-notch car produced just before the first changeover, at VIN 2761944, to E12 heads, aluminum intake runners, and firewall notches.

And VIN 2762643, a U.S. 1973 model, was the 14th 1973 tii manufactured, the 1973 model year having commenced with VIN 2762630.

Great colors on all three!

Regards,

Steve

Steve,    #2760173 does still exist,I own it and it is on jack stands in my shop being redone. It was a car that was stripped of everything when I found it.  No suspension, engine, trans, wiring, interior or glass.Just hood, doors and trunk lid.  I saved it from the crusher and it took me 6 months to get the clear Colorado title. I now have most of the pieces to finish it but, now that I know it may be more significant than just another (no offense) Tii, I may consider more research to bring it back to it's former glory. It is by far the cleanest shell that I have seen.   I will have to contact the guy that gave it to me to see where all of the parts went.

Do you know Steve if Alpina keeps records on there builds?  or Maybe see if that dealer is still around in Germany? dq

Very interesting. And it is a beautiful shell, indeed! Sunroof car no less.

Alpina was founded in 1965 by Burkhard Bovensiepen in Buchloe, Germany. In 1971, they were a BMW dealership and BMW tuner. Known widely today as Alpina, the firm is now registered as a car manufacturer. So they do, indeed, still exist, and might have some records regarding your car. In 1971, you would buy a new BMW through them and customize it to your needs. Your Alpina options — suspension, brakes, engine, rims, seats, whatever you wanted and could afford — would be installed on your new BMW in Buchloe, and the car would then be shipped to you. U.S. deliveries were rare.

It is conceivable, but also purely speculative at this point, that some of the parts borrowed from your car were borrowed because they were Alpina parts. Stated differently: “Hot!” ?

Due to U.S. emissions standards, it was difficult to import Alpina-modified engines without extensive testing. Thus, most U.S.-bound cars may have received suspensions, brakes, rims, etc., but not engine modifications.

A 2000tii touring sold on Bring a Trailer a few years ago is a beautifully-documented example of one of these rare Alpina imports.

Check out the documents that accompanied this car. A BMW treated to the Alpina experience was expensive!

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1972-bmw-2000tii-touring-alpina/

I guess I would start by contacting Alpina, leading off with the information from BMW Group Archives.

This is very exciting!

Regards,

Steve

Steve,

Very interesting.  I contacted Alpina last night and also have contacted the PO who in turn contacted Art Krill,(  another PO ) a local builder/racer and fellow RMVR member, here in Colorado.

Unfortunately, the car was not a sunroof car from the factory, it was added at a later point, not due to an accident but for aesthetics. I just finished cleaning up all of the welds and running new sunroof drains on all 4 corners.

I'm hoping that, at least  the 2760173 block is around his shop somewhere. I'll be talking with him in  the next couple of days.

This is indeed exciting.

Thanks for the input.

All good, dq!

And, since the presence or absence of a sunroof rarely appears in documentation — apart from a window sticker or equivalent — let’s not mention those roof welds and drains anymore.... ???

Keep digging!

Regards,

Steve
