Clearance between guibo and shifter rod

The Getrag 245 5 speed transmission I'm installing on my 1970 2002 had a slightly bent shift rod that comes out  of the transmision. It was caused in shipping and slightly contacted the 6 bolt guibo. I've bent it back upwards with no contact now. There's about 1.8 mm clearance between the guibo and shifter rod. Is that enough? Anyone know what the clearance should measure? Was not able to find that reference on any previous threads other than it's "close". Thanks in advance for any replies.

I'd make sure your transmission still can shift through all the gears.  Usually if you bent it that much it would affect the shifting.   You have almost no clearance at 1.8mm.  If you want to bend it up further you might try heating it but you will burn the seals and have to replace them.  If you try this I would take the seals out of the trans first.  You don't want to burn them and have them stuck in there.  You'll have to get it almost red hot before it will bend.  This is best done with trans out of the car.  Try to see where the bend is and put a small straight edge on it first to see how much it's bent and check as you bend it back to see how much you need to bend it.

You'd be better off shaving a bit off the outer diameter of the Guibo.  I did this on my '71 and that Guibo has gone almost 30,000 miles so far. It didn't take much to get good clearance. Rough sandpaper, or a sanding disc on a side grinder will get it done.

Ed is right about this method.  I didn't think of it but it's definitely less risky then trying to bend the shaft back.  I would only do that if you can't shift smoothly through the gears.  You don't want to put the trans in and then find out it's binding as you try to go through the gears.  After you do it I would check on it after a few hundred miles to make sure things are good and it's not rubbing.

Is it a 6 bolt or 8 bolt guibo? the 6 bolt one have almost no change in the diameter when spun at high speed. the 8 bolt one do grow a bit at high rpm, not that this directly affects the bent shift rod but you may be able to get by with the 6 bolt a bit easier.

Thanks for the replies.

The transmission shifts fine with all gears engaging.

I didn't bend back the shifter rod much to clear the guibo. Before the guibo just barely hit the shifter rod. Enough to feel a "click" but not enough to stop the guibo from turning. I used a piece of wood on the floor jack to bend the rod up to get that 1.8 mm clearance. I was worried that while straightening the rod I'd crack the case. I was able to get rod to come up while the rear of the trans mount was still in place. Didn't take that much force to bend the rod. There was an earlier thread about how another FAQer used a 3/4 inside diameter iron pipe to sucessfully straighten a bent shifter rod. Maybe the steel in the shifter rod isn't that hard?

Going to call it a day on further straightening of the shifter rod. Don't want to press my luck. Best to take another 2mm off the outside of the guibo with a sander.

I'm using a Febi brand 6 bolt guibo. Blunttech said it's better than the Meyle HD guibo in that the Febi doesn't expand like the Meyle can.

Suggest you use a wood bock on top of the seal area on the case while bending further or the rod could crack the case, it's rather thin in that area.  I had a similar experience with one received bent but I straightened the rod when the transmission was out of the car and positioned under the frame of my pickup.

A radiator shop is a good place to take a leak.

 

I have no idea what I'm doing but I know I'm really good at it.

I had the same issue and Blunt’s guys sent me a second guibo, and it has been over a year with no issues. 
 

I don’t recall which one they sent me first, or the replacement that was sent, but I would assume it is as you mentioned above.
