Depends on the year of your car...earlier cars used the smaller diameter nut; later cars, the large one.  Not sure when the changeover took place, but my '69 has the 19mm nut and my 73, 21mm.

Jeez dude, its a high temp locknut, the ribs are probably a result of the mfgr process. Or maybe the "ribs" are for her pleasure

Have no idea what you are asking/saying, horn cover smorn cover, the nut secures steering wheel to steering column.

High, low temp lock nut or plain nut with big wavy lock washer... Its all good. Head over to Ace (after you measure it)

  • Solution

The large nut is a M14 x 1.5 and the small nut is a M12 x 1.5/  You will need the corresponding wave washer based on your steering spindle.  You can use a modern locking nylon nut or a conical lock nut from Belmetric.

Get a vernier caliper measure diameter across the spindle to find either 12 or 14 mm by 1.5 pitch thread. As long as the initial threads your pic shoes engage lock it down.

fun fact I have one of those vernier caliper that has been sitting in my tool fetish shop for years and now i get to use it, the 14 is prob standard but man those threads seem smaller  , pics to follow...

m14 x 1.5 worked with a 1/2 washer, I swear I bought that size at big  joe's but it didn't work, maybe the nut was in the wrong bin. Anyways steering wheel is tight now. I still wonder what the design idea was for the ribbed flange, thanks all.

The ribbed flange on that lock nut is meant for high vibration resistance such as drivelines or suspensions. I believe a nylock nut would be sufficient for the steering wheel application. For some reason BMW retrofitted the flange style as before they were nyloc.

Well there are two popular methods  for high temp all metal locknuts to do what they do.

1. distort the threads a bit on upper portion usually by compressing.

2. A portion f the nut is formed into an elliptical shape.

Its likely those "ribs" are tool marks from those processes, some kind of sizing die.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
