Or...you can do it yourself and learn!  Changing pads on the front disk brakes is a pretty easy job and a great thing for a beginning mechanic to learn.  After removing the wheel, there are a few easy steps to check the condition of the caliper pistons and the rotor, then remove the old pads, retract the caliper pistons and install new pads.  Lotsa instructions in the FAQ archives and/or on You Tube.  

 

It's been my experience that you go through two sets of pads for every set of rear brake shoes.  Rear drum brakes are a little more complicated, but they wear more slowly so checking brake lining thickness (by removing the brake drum) might save you having to do 'em right now.
