our new-to-us 1600-2

Hello all,

I've lurked on this forum for several years, but have spent most of my time over on the e9 forum where I'm documenting an intensive (if not slow) restoration of a coupe.  But I am pleased to report that we finally brought a roundie home!!!  It is a 1968 1600-2.  My normal MO is to jump in and begin a restoration.  But with this car, I'm just trying to sort out a few mechanical and electrical items and then we'll simply drive it for a while.  Eventually, no doubt, I'll start to peel the onion and it will likely turn into a more robust restoration.  At that time I'll start a restoration thread and look forward to the sage advice, comradery, and input from the group.  But for now, allow me to introduce our new little car:

Welcome to a fellow e9 owner. Impressive is another good word for your e9 resto. Your 1600 looks great. It’s good to have an m10 in your life.

Enjoy!

Hi John,

Thank you! Great to see you over here, too.  Amy is very concerned that this little roundie is going to be too much of a distraction and will disrupt any momentum I pretend to build on the metal work.  Sometimes a distraction is good.

It’s a nice distraction to have. Especially when you can take it out to Cars & Coffee and the like. When I bring one of my cars to a non BMW centric event I swear the 02 gets more attention than the e9 because everyone knows someone who had one or they always wanted one.

It took me a year to do the 5speed/Injected M30 swap on my e9. My mantra was “at least an hour” every time I did some work. So many nights I’d go out after dinner and spend an hour on the swap.

My wife was happy, she always knew were to find me. ?

I have JMinPDX above to thank for my 2002. He sold it to me just before Covid 2020 hit and it has been a great consolation.  I am in the exact opposite situation 2002/1600 wise than autokunst. Thanks to  John.(JMinPDX)

Lilli came from JMinPDX with 78,000 original, pampered miles on her clock. The only thing I had to do was delete the diving boards. She is as original, untouched, rust free as you can get.

Here is my grandson, Orion, ready to roll. Well, almost. He will inherit Lilli eventually.

I expect autokunst will bring his 1600 up to his high standards. He is the perfect owner.

Thanks Steve - that is a lot of pressure.  This 1600 was "supposed to be" a rough, scratchy little driver for us to zip around town in.  But maybe I'll tinker.  ?

Lilli looks great!

Do you mind me asking where the '68 came from? I used to have one of those manila '68s that ended up in New York, last I heard. I miss that little car. It was a lot of fun.

Hi Jerry,

The car is actually Chamonix.  It has been re-sprayed and perhaps the new paint is less Chamonix than original.  But I think what is affecting the appearance most is the warm lighting in my garage.  It makes everything look warm and comfy.  ?

I purchased the car from a gentleman in Chicago, who had purchased the car about 6 years ago from a forum member here.  I even know who the two owners before that are.  Which is to say, I know more about the history of this car than any I've ever owned.  That said, I don't really know much about it.  But I'm getting to know it a little more each day.

I've changed most of the fluids, and am continuing the shakedown drives.  There are a lot of clunks and rattles - many from the rear half of the car.  I will be systematically trying to isolate, identify and solve these noises which should not only improve ride quality but also mental perception.

Today included the car's first visit to my office "downtown".  It's a big, big world out there for such a small, sweet car.

Does it have the now-quite-rare Chocolate (a.k.a., “UPS”) Brown interior, or is that just the lighting in the garage photo? This interior color was phased out around March-ish 1968, replaced by the lighter Tobacco Brown interior. What does BMW Group Archives (info.grouparchiv@bmwgroup.com) state was the car’s original exterior color?

Lastly, 1968 model year ‘02’s did not have head restraints, whereas a 1969 model year ‘02 built late in the 1968 calendar year would have head restraints. I’m guessing 1968 is on the title, but was it built after September 1, 1968, making it a 1969 model year example?

Regards,

Steve

It was generally paired with Sahara, Manila, and Florida exteriors.

It was posted earlier that the car was chamonix
