if it hasn't been stripped already, remove a door card or rear panel and see what color lurks behind them

+1

And if those areas have already been re-painted, look way up under the dash!

Your choices are shown below: the exterior-interior color concordance from February 1976.

What color is your interior currently? A few good photos of your car, including the interior, engine compartment, trunk, and underside can suggest to us the original color. Unless it’s had a very very thorough re-paint, there are usually hints…

VIN 2393158 is a June or July 1976 2002A, very close to the end of 2002A production, which ended with VIN 2393292.

Steve

Most times you can see some of the original color inside and above the glovebox.

Another good place to look is under the fuse box it's not painted directly but there should be a lot of over spray in there.

If everybody in the room is thinking the same thing, then someone is not thinking.

… Steve mentioned it was a 2002a does the a mean automatic trans….

Yes, all the 239xxxx cars were 1976 model U.S.-spec 2002 automatics. The driveline tunnel on the automatics was a tad wider — to accommodate the automatic trans — making them able to fit the e21 overdrive 5-speed without applying a BFH in the vicinity of the accelerator pedal.

Below is the entry of the VIN decoder offered by the BMW 2002 Car Club of Columbia. It’s accurate but lacks the build date specificity of the Archives report, as well as the exterior color provided by Archives.

Steve

if you want a definitive color for the car,

in most cases, even the best body shops

do not take the vertical "B" pillar aluminum

off the cars because it is attached with

rivets. under that is always an unfaded example

of the original color.
