She's not quite as cozy as jp5Touring's Super-Duty rental though.

 

325,000 miles on that 402 Big-Block and it  just  keeps  getting  smooother.

 

(it's a rusty old beater... but I do love that truck)

 

I tend to agree with the rental truck idea, instead of stressing the Subaru.

I towed home not a few 2002’s with my snub-nose ‘70 Econoline -> V8 302 with 3 on the tree, custom widened steelies on the back. It was simple, rugged, reliable (but man, would that engine cover get hot). Here it is, pulling a car I purchased and loaded* to the roof with parts (*it was not a low rider).

 

Other tow vehicles have included a ‘69 F250 (sold) and a 75 Econoline (now filled with parts). Currently, it’s a 2000 F250 Super Duty with a 7.3 diesel = loud, strong, and luxury.

Yes, Ken.  My van was like that one, but without the aluminum grille.  Mine was the early style, which was painted steel.

 I fitted a 6000 lb capacity trailer hitch to my 3.0L X5. A fairly light duty set up.

Great for pulling my utility trailer around and it works ok hauling an 02 on a U haul car carrier.

I have brought 2 cars home that way but both were pretty much "flat" runs. 

I suspect a run down I5 through the hill county would push my 6 cyl. X5 to its limits.

I would be more concerned with my  brakes. U haul car carriers are not equipped with electric brakes.

 

So OP? I would have 2 concerns about using the wifes new vehicle:

1. Its the wifes new vehicle ?

2. Its still under warranty right?, wonder how the dealer would react to a warranty claim made for damage incurred while towing?
