I was fortunate enough to extract my heat shield bolts intact, so I replaced 'em with stainless steel bolts (they're 6 x 1mm, a common size) and then used some anti-seize paste on the threads.  They come out easily now.  Oh, and I used a stainless steel washer under the bolt head to cover up the rust around the bolt holes.

We've had this discussion about solid vs plated nuts on the exhaust system before. 

The same holds true for the little heat shield bolts too.  Solid copper is too soft.

 

Magnuts... you're funny Ray.

 

I used some copper to patch my cracked steel heat shield.

 

I removed it though and have the e21 gasket / shield now.
