My '69 is the 40th "second series" '69 off the line--that is VINs produced after 1 January when Federal standards changed and forced some changes to the car.  However, BMW tells me it wasn't built until 4 Feb 1969, so apparently no US spec cars were assembled in January.  

 

We can confirm this if anyone has a '69 with a VIN between 1664761 (last "first series" '69 and 1664801 (my car).  Anyone???

 

Don'tcha just love all this arcane '02 trivia?

Ok Mike, I'm officially confused.

According to my info, the last USA '69 built in 1968 was 1664491, thus, the first USA '69 built in 1969 was 1664492. So wouldn't the "second series '69" start with 1664492?

Also, according to the Seller (2016) 1664565 was built 10 Jan 1969.

Now I'm confused!  Or maybe the factory is.  According to the factory parts book, all the changes from first to second series '69 cars took place at VIN 1664761.  Long to short neck differential, 2 to 3 speed heater blower, revised trunk lid torsion spring, etc etc.  That, plus some other things that were mandated by new Federal regulations that took effect on 1 January '69 took place at VIN 1664760, with 61 being the first second series car--supposedly sometime on or after 1 January.   According to the factory, 1969 model year (1 Sept-31 Aug) VINs run from 1662759 to 1666900.  Some cars will fall outside that range due to sell date and state law mandating assignment of model year to sell date.  Perhaps the factory assembled some "first series" cars after 1 January to use up parts, and didn't start producing "second series" cars until sometime in mid-late January.  Shhhhh--don't tell the Feds!

My records show that 1664760, the last long-neck differential U.S.-spec 2002, was built in the last half of January 1969. I don’t have a specific date but it’s probably closer to January 31st than to January 15th.

 

Many of these first-to-second-series changes — short-neck differentials,  three-speed blowers, etc. — affect all ‘02’s globally. Other of these changes — headrests, side markers, etc. — affect only a small portion of ‘02’s, the U.S.-bound versions, and those were required by U.S. regulations going into effect on January 1, 1969. I doubt that BMW built U.S.- bound ‘02’s on, say, January 10, 1969, without headrests. Could the parts book simply be wrong about the changeover date for the U.S.- mandated changes? Did someone “simplify” two different sets of changes or “mis-understand” the two sets of changes — one global and driven by production costs and market forces, the other U.S.-only and driven by U.S. regulations — and accidentally conflate both events into a single changeover VIN? I suspect the parts book is wrong with respect to the U.S-mandated changes.

 

OK. Who has an ‘02 from VIN 1664492 through VIN 1664760? What is it’s manufacturing date (just to confirm)? Does it have factory seats with headrests? Does it have side markers? Etc.
