M10 head gasket

Recommended Posts

I currently have a 1976 2002 sitting in my garage with a confirmed blown head gasket, when I checked the oil pan I found a small aluminum piece and I’m just sure if I should go thru the effort of replacing the head gasket or is there still a possibly chance of the motor still being good? I’m not very knowledgeable about cars in general to much and I’ve only been learning from an E30 so a 2002 with a smaller motor has kinda took me on a side trip. Even tho the M10 does look easier to work on I just wanna make sure I get it done correctly to get my classic running ? any advice will help! Thanks in advance!

Picture of it would be nice. Rest of oil pump: pick up part - you take it off and it’s safe?

Pull the head and all will be revealed. Pulling the head is an hour or two job. Just make sure the timing chain does not skip a tooth top or bottom.  Keep it under tension with a bungee cord and zip tie the chain to the sprocket.

The definitive way to test the head gasket is to remove it.

It takes less time and is easier than the oil pan.  And a hell of a lot less painful.  AND no oil in the face,

unless you want some.

Once the head's off, then you can figure out if it's worth working on the engine, or rather, what your investment needs to be.

An M20 WILL go into a 2002.

M10's were also found in E30's.
