74 2002 - Estoril Blue (Anyone know anything about this car?)

Price: $1
Location: SF Bay area

Description:

Years ago I owned a 76 2002  and loved it, I also have owned an Estoril Blue E36 M3C; and I've had a recent itch to replace one of the other.  I know it isn't a Roundie, doesn't have a sunroof, and is not desirable to purists due to the mods, but this car is calling out to me.

I live on the west coast and this is on the East Coast; before getting too excited about this car I am wondering if anyone knows anything about it?  TIA.

I see that the new Rotas in the 2012 ad are still new ;-)

I wonder if the windshield frame rust was addressed.

Not so bad, methinks.

Man, I still want this car, but the consignment guy wont even return emails.  Maybe he really isn't under contract with the seller.  Does anyone have any idea of how to contact the seller who supposedly lives in Marshall VA?

Don't think we here have seen that car around these parts.

Who knows, maybe this consignment guy is just a fraud.  I guess I should give up on this dream :-(

Have you tried calling him? He (Paul?) states he has his phone with him at all times. Maybe your email is dropping in to his junk box.

They have many cars on consignment so I can only assume they are legit.

Yes, I have talked to Paul twice, but he didn't get back to my last email (and he had replied to several others - so not getting stuck in his junk folder).  Apparently, he did not want to:

  • Provide a copy of some of the "new" receipts
  • Provide a video of the car running
  • Explain how I protect myself from purchasing a car from him cross country (I.e., I send him a cashiers check and then hope he sends me the car?)  Perhaps just my ignorance; but since I have not purchased a car cross country before and I have to assume people ask him this question all the time, I just wanted to understand how a buyer protects themselves.

It was when I asked these questions that he went silent on the emails.  I am sure I could call him, but everything I asked him seemed like a major effort, such as when I asked if the dash was cracked or covered, he said it was perfect; but in the add on his website is says that the dash has a custom molded dash cover.  (To his defense, he actually just copied and pasted an add from 5 years earlier, including the pictures, so I don't expect him to be too familiar with the car). He did send new pictures and a few things had changed (the car no longer has the window decal or badges - which is fine with me, but might surprise some other buyer who liked the pictures as represented.)

Sorry to rant, I just wish the seller was more motivated to work with a concerned buyer.

It's very difficult to get satisfactory assurances from a consignor when buying across the country, I fear.  Having bought two 02s sight-unseen, and the Alpina as well, my experience says that there are always not-insignificant surprises both good and bad.  You try to triangulate -- have a remote PPI (but the shop has it's own subjective view of what the car should be like, maybe correctly, maybe not) and try to get someone here to put eyes on it for you.

I suppose I'm a bit too much of a purist for that color, but that's my subjective view.  Nice car otherwise.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
