  1. I am sure this has been asked, but I did not find an answer in the technical wheel section. Time for new rubber on my 73 Tii and I am wondering how wide I can go (or low, profile) without rubbing issues. Also, curious if people feel wider will provide better grip (I remember when the Mini's came out the base model was quicker in the slalom than the S, and the article said the skinnier tires provided better slalom handling - which never made sense to me). Anyway, how wide can I go, and how low (profile) and why or why should I not max out the width. Currently running 195 / 60 / 14. TIA
  2. Awesome pictures, Dodge Ridge hasn't changed in 45+ years.
  3. It is original and those are my thoughts as well. Thanks.
  4. Haha, I'd sell the vette and get a 5 speed supercharged Estoril Blue E36 M3...but the Chevy is my wife's ?
  5. Final verdict, it's repairable; $800 to repair, or $2,0000 for a new head from Ireland? What would you do, and why?
  6. It is what it is. I have a cracked cylinder head on my "73 Tii (number 2). I understand I need to replace the top end with a new or used one. Any thoughts, suggestions, where to find one, and/or if this is an "opportunity" to modify my otherwise stock car. I am inclined to keep it as original as possible, but open to suggestions/thoughts. Thanks in advance.
  7. Steven, For $150, plus shipping and loosening a few bolts, this seems a bit easier than some of the other idea. I think bringing it to a radiator shop for an assessment in the Bay Area would cost more than that alone. Thanks for the suggestion. Dave PS. regarding the engine flush, is that a DIY project, or better left to a professional. If DIY, any tips on what to flush it with?
  8. Healey,

I can be pretty flexible, just need to plan around zoom meetings here and there.  If easier to text, I am at 650.218.2447.

Thursday afternoon is currently open for me.

    Dave

  9. Healey, I am in San Carlos and would be interested in taking you up on your offer, what part of the Bay are you in (I am glad to come to you, mask in hand...or mouth rather)? Dave
  10. Thanks Toby, You don't happen to know my friends John and Wendy who live in Carnation and have a nursery around there? Dave
  11. Thanks Mike, Taking it to a radiator specialist sounds like a good idea, I think I will start with that...I guess was just really hoping to have another opportunity to wrench on my car (by replacing the radiator)...maybe I'll finally get around to fixing the self cancelling turn indicator and let the specialist work on the radiator :-) Dave
  12. Thanks Steve, No AC, so that's not an issue. Thermostat was replaced about 14 years ago, or 17k miles, and the radiator fluids may not have been flushed for 5 years or about 10k miles; could that make a difference? Are there other cooling systems components I should check? As for overheating, If the needle gets to 75%, I call that "overheating, I don't let it get too close to the red. I do push the car pretty hard, and can resolve the "overheating" on the freeway by turning on the heat and slowing down, below 4k RPM generally does it. But even this past weekend I was going up hill for about 4 miles on a curvy road with traffic (<15 minutes), not pushing it, it got up to the 75% mark again and I figure it is time to do something about it. Dave
  13. I have receipts back about 15 years, and 14 years ago a thermostat was installed, but no details other than the price ($39). About 17k miles have been put on the car since then
  14. I have searched and see quite a few threads on radiator options, but the most recent seems to be about 4 years old and I am wondering if there are other options, or if options have changed. I live in the SF bay area and use my car a DD (15 miles to work, pre-Covid-19) as long as it isn't raining (not because my car is a garage queen, I just prefer a safer car when the weather is bad). I also don't drive too far if it is hotter than about 75 degrees, because the car gets very close to overheating in traffic or when going up hill, even for just one mile. I do basic wrenching, such as replacing a radiator, but I still asked my mechanic what he thought, and he suggested just starting with an auxiliary fan to see if that solves the problem. I am not sure that will do much. My car is relatively stock, so I am not a fan of the big IE aluminum ones, and I am not inclined to use a 320i radiator, etc. So, I am looking for suggestions: 1. Install an auxiliary fan 2. See if I can find a local shop to rod out the current one (it doesn't seem easy to find people who do this any more) 3. See if I can find someone to recore (looks like the Silicon Garage guys is still MIA or not worth tracking down due to previous posts) 4. Buy a new one if I do this, i assume I should replace the thermostat at the same time, of is this really necessary? Regarding buying new one, Pelican doesn't have one, the other best suggestions I have seen (from 2016 posts), are for Wassenkuhler. Is this still the best option, or are there others. If I use Wassen, I see they have a: Standard one (https://www.wallothnesch.com/wasserkuehler-1502-2002ti-11-31-14.html) High cooling option (https://www.wallothnesch.com/en/radiator-with-high-cooling-rate-with-original-diamensions-11-31-14.html) Any thoughts on this company or the difference between the two radiators they offer? Lastly, are the other non-BMW options that retain the look and fit of the OEM radiator? Thanks in advance, Dave
  15. So, I finally got the BT adapter and it all works but have yet to permanently install. I am thinking of installing the amp under the back seat, drivers seat, or in the trunk. Any thoughts on best placement (I am concerned about heat if under the rear seat). Also, I am not much of an electrician and am waiting for a friend to come over to help find a power source that is powerful enough and only hot when the car is on. I am lazy and trying not to have to run power to the front of the car, is there any power source in the rear I can use (maybe rear taillights)?
  16. Thanks everyone, part on order. Looking forward to figuring out how many more parts I'll need to order :-)
  17. Old school tech question. I have an old ADS PQ10 that use to be in my '76 BMW 2002. I now have another '73 Tii and am wondering if I can skip installing a headunit and just use the PQ10 with some sort of bluetooth adapter to power my speakers and stream music from my phone. Any thoughts if there is an adapter on the market that would make this work? If so, any link, or info, is appreciated. TIA.
  18. I had searched months ago and did not see a post, I should have searched again before asking. Anyway, awesome thread, thanks for sharing.
  19. I have a stock 73 tii with, repaint in original Riviera Blue. It is by no means a show car, but a pretty good 10-footer, daily driver when it is not raining or too hot. I am toying with the idea of the 245 getrag 5-speed swap, but in the back of my mind I am wondering if that add or detracts (or has no impact) on resale value. FWIW, I don't plan on selling the car for 20+ years, when I am too old to push in a clutch. I would store the original tranny, so that someone could always put it back on if they wanted to for some reason. Other than shelling our the money for the swap, I believe it is a no-brainer, but curious what others think of this one mod and the effect on the cars valuation. TIA PS. I know the BBS rims are not stock, but I do have the original 13' chromodora's
  20. I have a 73 Tii that runs hot in 75-80 degree weather, especially when going uphill. I am concerned because I blew the engine in my 76 2002 25 years ago due to overheating. I was planning in replacing the dual core with a triple core radiator upon someone's suggestion, but my mechanic thought it would be just as efficient and more cost effective to install an auxiliary fan. Thoughts in the two options? TIA.
  21. Interested and local (enough to pick up). Is this still available, and what is the condition/story behind it? Also, how complete is it, do you know what else would be required to install?
  22. You mean this hole? I chose the fabulous, lazy, cheap, sock method.
  23. Thanks. I have seen similar write ups, I just couldn't tell from your picture what was included in your sale (mostly my fault as I am not a mechanic, so don't know exactly what I am looking at.). I guess I am ultimately trying to determine if I will need to spend another, $100, $500, or $1,000+ to have all the necessary parts for the swap. I'll try and do a little more research to educate myself.
