The smog pump wasn't just a California thing.  I'm quite confident all U.S. 1969 models came with them, and I'd guess that all U.S. 1968 models did as well, not just tahoedon's.  My very early 1970 (VIN 1668093, September 8, 1969) was thusly equipped.  1967 models?  I don't believe so.  My 1967 1600-2 was pretty darned un-touched when a bought it -- I was the second owner and the first owner was truly a "little old (German-accented) lady" -- and I cannot recall a smog pump.  Mike S. probably knows for certain on the applicability to all 1968 models, and I'm confident we've discussed this subject in previous threads, so a search might reveal more history.

VIN 1569778 was probably manufactured in early July 1969.  BMW Archives will provide the actual manufacturing date and confirm the factory color (Granada if red, Verona came along later).  Just email your car's VIN to info.grouparchiv@bmwgroup.com and request their records for your car.

Alex,  Sweet!  Love the car.  I have a Granada Red 1970 1600 with manufacture date of November 1969.  Definitely Granada Red.  When I bought mine at 18 years old in 1985, the paint looked almost the same, a little more faded than yours.  You are going to have a blast with that car.  And yes, smog pump was on my car as well when I purchased it (single barrel solex).  Keep us posted and post some pictures of the interior when you get a chance!

you sir, have stumbled onto a very nice car.  your brightwork is plenty bright as it is.  so is your paint.  apply a wax, but be easy on using an electric polisher.  avoid it actually.  those single barrel solex's are a wonder to have on a sorted engine.

Thanks guys! I've learned a lot in just one day on this forum. I'll post some more pictures soon, and show you all the other side of her, her battle scars. I do have a big rust hole on the driver side i need to tend to and do something about the white trunk lid. The whole suspension and brake system needs a makeover too. Have you guys been down this path of restoration? Some of the rust issues scare me and make me question this purchase.

My VIN is 1570472, Thinking mine must be an early 1970 model.  Congrats again & cant wait to see more pics.  This really takes me back as this is almost identical to my car when I bought it!

This is what it looks like now after 32 years of ownership.  Still my favorite car to drive!

Very nice! Can't wait to get mine looking like that. Did you repaint to get that shine? Why does your front bumper look different then mine?

Nice car, Alex. Single-stage red paint tends to shine up really nicely by hand--you'll probably be very pleasantly surprised. And definitely don't throw out those silver wiper blades! You can easily get inserts for them, though you may need to cut them down.

 

Your front bumper looks different because yours has the original guards on it.

 

And for the record, my early '71 (mfg. 11/30/70) came with the single-barrel Solex and an air pump. Still have all of the smog parts, actually... in a box.

Alex,  My 1600 has been rebuilt twice!  (Thanks to all the salt used in upstate NY).  It has new fenders, rockers, rear wheel arch overlays, drivers side floor in back seat area.  Base coat clear coat using the original Granada paint code.  I took the guards off the front bumpers because at the time I thought it looked a little cleaner without them.  As David says, give it a good shine by hand first, you may be surprised how well it shines up.  Good Luck!

Thanks guys! Joe, hearing how your car has been rebuilt twice and looking sharp gives me hope. I like the look of your bumpers without the guards (√ for first cosmetic change). What polisher works good on these single stage paints? My unknown brand polisher isn't doing much for it. Also, where can I get some touch up paint? I haven't had any luck searching.

Alex,

 

 Your car has been repainted, so without knowing the exact color that was used, finding an exact match will be... near impossible.  If your paint is single stage, it can be brought back to a decent shine; all dependent on how good a job the painter did when he laid it down.

 

Here's an example of a very cheap, single stage blue metallic that I was able to make "shine" by hand with different grades of polish and plenty of wax.  It can be done...

Or, from MidAmericaFest a few years ago... a real professional with an orbital and special polishes performed a miracle on a badly oxidized, original, BMW single stage....amazing.

Hey Ed, 

 

That makes sense! I have a feeling that whoever did the paint job was not very good, the overspray on this is unnecessary. I was hoping to get a match, because I need to match the white trunk lid to the rest of the car and all the patch work I'll do will need to get coated too. Ed can I see pics of your BMW?
